Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

I mean, it's Burton going off, so how bad can it be?

I was expecting more from this, which was pretty unfair. I don't know what I expected exactly--perhaps a deeper message or something. The messages are pretty superficial, but again, that's to be expected perhaps from something that was faithfully adapted from a children's novel.

All that being said, I enjoyed it. First, Burton goes off, so the visuals are creative and stunning and interesting and delightful. Second, Depp is just fabulous--so snippy and charming and weird. The rest of the cast isn't bad either, but Depp--rightly--steals the show.

There's not a whole lot to say after that, except: I had a feeling that I knew the guy who played Charlie's father. I couldn't place him though. So, I faithfully went to IMDB and looked him up. Even then, as I was reading his credits, I didn't know where I knew him from. And then, quite a bit down the page, there it was: he was Danny from Flirting! Shut up! If you have never seen that movie, you must! It's delightful and features young Thandie Newton and young-ish Nicole Kidman. But this guy is the star. It rocks.
