The Skeleton Key

Well, I suppose you can open the door

I enjoyed this more than I thought, in part because of the ending. And, yes, this is one of those movies that make it impossible for you to talk about them in any specificity.

I mean, here's the thing. There are two kinds of thrillers. Most thrillers are like The Skeleton Key, meaning that you, as the viewer, keep on trying to guess what the real mystery is. And, in some ways, that's really annoying. That is, they are advertising throughout the movie: "Hey! There's a really big mystery! Hello!? Try to figure me out!" Then, there are movies like The Sixth Sense and The Spanish Prisoner, films that don't really scream at you to figure them out. Perhaps it's because they don't advertise themselves as a big thriller with a secret. (Of course, The Sixth Sense ruined that for Shyamalan, and now he (feels he) has to include mystery upon mystery upon mystery to keep us guessing (viz. The Village).

So, The Skeleton Key started to annoy me with that, in addition to the "girl-why-are-you-snooping/staying?" trope to be found in most horror films. That being said, the acting is roundly good, and anything with Peter Sarsgaard is pretty good.
