The Sparks of Foster-McConaugheyOr, Movies that Suck Me In
So the great/horrible thin about having HBO is that
one randomly comes across movies and then decides to stay for a while.
I have two that I will admit suck me in--two films which shame me. But I'm a bigger man than that. [By the way, the two do not include the mother of all sucking-in films for me, The Joy Luck Club, which is shameful and horrible and irresistible. It deserves its own post at some point.] The first is Contact, that largely bad Robert Zemeckis vehicle that features many bad aspects. Despite its interminable length, the absolute lack of chemistry between Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey (she was able to generate more from a serial killer, and he from a pair of bongos), the endless parade of baddies (including...wait for it...wait for it...James Woods!), and the Huh?...OK... factor of the climax, I get sucked in every time. I would love to have some interpretations of why I'm sucked in. I mean, there is the quasi-disaster-ness of it, and I do enjoy a good alien film every now and again. I love me some Foster as well, and she's in every scene. I dunno though. The second is actually a good movie--Finding Neverland. I don't know if I actually reviewed the film here, but it's quite charming and Depp and Winslet are wonderful as always. What's shameful here is that I basically bawled in the theater for the last hour of the movie. At home? Same result. I mean, come on: I knew what was coming and still I had tears streaming down my face. Is it that damn kid from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that did it? I don't think so. It's just so damned beautiful and sad and literary. I can't stand it. Anyway, now that I've confessed, do I have any others who will care to admit the movies they are sadly sucked in by? Hmmmmmmm?
