Avalon

So, it was our anniversary Wednesday, and we always go out for a nice dinner to celebrate. I had some points at Open Table that were set to expire, so we decided to go through them for the reservation. We weren't that keen on going into center city, so we decided, after briefly perusing the menu, on Avalon.

Overall, the meal was fine. Everything was fine. It's just that, at the prices they are charging, I frankly expected/wanted more--something to knock me off my socks.

The room is nice, though it feels a bit like a romantic living room in a McMansion--a bit too beige, and, while I love them, the little fountain was a bit odd. Perhaps the patio would have been better, but it was full because we are finally having nice weather.

We passed on the prix fixe, which, as they usually are, is a bargain, because we had our eyes set on some dishes which weren't on it--for Rick an appetizer, for me an entree.

To start, I had the Boston Bib salad with apples, goat cheese, and walnuts (I love that kind of salad), which was strangely dressed, in that it was almost non-existent in spots, and gloopy in others. A vinaigrette shouldn't really be that hard to toss. Rick had oysters with brie, which looked fabulous--it's hard for Rick to be discriminating when it comes to oysters, because he loves them so much. (Brief aside. I know I eat too much, but is it really that big of a deal to just give me a basket of bread, rather than giving me a slice at a time? It's not fancy; it's (or at least appears to be) cheap.)

For entrees, Rick had pork tenderloin with shrimp in some sort of sauce; I had the NY strip (when I go fancy, the veg lifestyle goes out the window) with some asparagus on the side, and what else, I cannot even remember (and at publishing time, it's only been two days). Like I said, nothing outstanding, all passable, but for a bill of $90 (and that doesn't include alcohol as it's a BYOB), I just think it should be more than just good.
