Salisbury prep

Offensively, there are many things, but I want to keep it simple.

...Defensively, we will work on our directional marks.

...As for plays, I'd like to run Opel, which is a sideline play, which is basically the up and fill, works great on a end zone trap as well. Let's try to run Subaru as well, which is similar to Mazda. If we can do this we'd have 4 plays (MOTS, TOMS, MOTTOS), so we can rock the anagram options, and work on our mental game as well.

Recap: Subaru, Opel, Hard cuts, hard marks, Up calls.

JMU recap

The error in execution, I believe, will get smoothed out the more we run the offense. We will work on the fast break, dump cuts, and endzone offense, and get better at those things. As long as we try to make the offense work, our execution will steadily improve.

...Only in the first game did you come out hard. Good teams set the tone of the game early on. They go for the throat early, and don't let go. So many time teams will go down early to a team they perceive is better than them and fold.... It is a skill to be able to motivate yourself to go out and give it your all on the first point.

...On Sunday, you were able to apply consistent defensive pressure to JMU by keeping you pulls in bounds, covering them, and marking aggressively.... We can still improve in all of those areas, and we'll need to. Part of the reason, the Mary Washington game was a blow out is that you did not pressure them on defense.

...We still need to get people cutting more frequently and harder.... Remember if you are not cutting move away from the disc to create space.

JMU Tournament Prep

As you may already know, or will soon come to find out, I like to emphasize three areas to focus on at a tournament.... I know many of you are excited about our number one seed, as well as the opportunity to play outside for the first time this year. I am too, but to often teams coming into the tournament with a one seed, focus on winning a tournament.... For receivers this means active cutting to the dangerous areas in the outside lanes of the field. For handlers this means following your throws, and moving the disc quickly.

...It's out first tournament of the year, and there will be many mistakes made.... All that I ask is that you learn from these mistakes, and figure out how to limit them in the future. As always, this tournament will be a success if we come out of it a better team than we started it.... Take this weekend's tournament as an opportunity to learn, improve your play, and improve the teams play.

Plays for JMU tournament

I would like the team to be able to run the stop disc plays Mazda (pg. 37) and Toyota (pg. 42) at the JMU tournament. Make this happen.

Brown Tournament

So I finally got to see you guys play a whole tournament this past week at Brown's home tournament. If you judge the weekend on out 1-4 record, you are using the wrong criterion.... The consistent improvement the team showed over the weekend was enough for me to judge it as a successful weekend.... However we got better at zone offense over the course of the weekend.... We will work on this over the winter, and it will get better. Last winter, our marks improved considerably over the winter.

...I enjoyed hanging out with you guys at the fields and at the party.... I promise each and every one of you that my overarching desire to make all of you better ultimate players, If you have questions, ask me, I'll do my best to answer them. Sometimes it's kinda hard to call subs and answer questions in between point, but I'll do my best.

Founders Sectional Tournament

Even though I only watched you guys closely in a couple of game, I was impressed. I got some compliments from the Pike players on your behalf after the game with them. I saw guys trying to run the O and D, which is the most important thing. Sure there are things that we need to work on. Actually there is a ton of things to work on, but that's fine, since it's only September. Compared to this time last year or even early Spring last year, this team is way ahead.... I think that last year, it was there, but not as pronounced.

...I hope that if nothing else, everyone has come out of this tournament optimistic and excited about the season.... Harness these emotions to work hard at practice so that you can learn and improve.... The team has a lot of well earned good feelings after this tournament, but it is very important to use these to build.
