Practice 9/7/04

Tonight was the first practice, and we focused on three critical skills: throwing, cutting, and marking. Raj introduced the straight up mark, which we will used this year as a prat of our straight up defense. This defense was very effective for Rutgers last year, and should be again. Ellis, Orin and Vlad introduced the primary receiver cut: a deep cut to the back corner of the end zone, followed by an in cut directly at the thrower, after a pump fake. The deep cut is a real cut, so make sure you look back at the thrower. If you are pump faked, gather yourself, and cut back in. Run all the way through the catch. I introduced the forehand an backhand throws. These are the throws you'll be using at least 95% of the time. Practicing your throws outside of practice is the most important thing you cam be doing right now. Focus on stepping out wide and throwing flat throws. After those skill introductions, we did the go to drill and the flow drill. The go to drill allows you to practice throwing to in cuts, as well as catching the disc. The flow drill is the first introduction to the Rutgers stack offense, which combines horizontal handler movement at the front of the stack with vertical cuts by receivers cutting out of the back of the stack. I thought todays practice was good, with people focusing on completing throws. Keep throwing outside of practice, and when you do throw with purpose.
