For the Lefties
Since we have a few lefties on the team this
year, up from zero last year, I asked a former teammate of mine Matt R. to give
me some tips for using leftiness to get the best possible advantage. Matt's
left handed and is one of the captains of the Santa Cruz club team and coach of
the UC Santa Cruz team. He and I played together for a number of club and
college seasons. Here are his
thoughts:
Hmmm .... I think the biggest
thing comes from being able to get the
high
lefty backhand off break mark almost at
will. Markers are in general not
prepared
for the lefty break. Muscle memory will lead them to mark
with
their right hand high for the high
righty backhand.
Quick break mark
throws are huge. Don't let the marker figure out you
are
lefty and adjust his style. You may here
"Oh you're a lefty" as I did from
an E-Pig
player when I broke him to Daryl who ripped a 60 yd bomb !!
