Summary: With tools for photography, moviemaking, DVD production, and music creation, Apple's iLife software can enhance just about any educational experience. The real power comes when all of these programs are used together, and in this fully updated book, longtime digital media guru Jim Heid, along with education expert Ted Lai, provide teachers with both the technical detail they need to work with the software (including an interactive tour of the iLife suite) and the lesson plans and projects they need to get students using the tools creatively and effectively. Teachers learn by doing as the book steps them through projects that teach iLife basics. They can then choose from among the 6 full lessons and 20 mini lessons (that can be taught in an afternoon or just over a day or two). The lessons include projects to share that knowledge with students, student tip sheets, and more. This book is beautifully illustrated with updated coverage that includes the latest products in iLife '08 (now available for US$79): iDVD, iPhoto, iMovie, GarageBand, iWeb, and .Mac Web Gallery. These amazing applications bring out the creative spirit in everyone.

Summary: The first edition of "The iPhone Book" was chosen by Amazon's editors as their Computer/Technology Book of the Year. This new version of the book, totally updated and expanded for the 3G iPhone, was chosen by Amazon as one of their "Top 10 Must-Have Books" in their annual list of the most "gift-worthy" books of the holiday season.
Here's why this book has become such a hit with iPhone users around the world: it's not a “Tell-me-all-about-it” book, which has in-depth discussions on everything from wireless network protocols to advanced compression codes. Instead it's a “show-me-how-to-do-it” book, that skips all the confusing techno-jargon and just tells you, in plain simple English, exactly how to use the iPhone features you want to use most.
The book’s layout is brilliant, with each page covering just one single topic, so finding the information you need is quick and easy, with a large full-color photo on each page so you can see exactly how it works.
In this book, you'll learn:
• How to set up and manage your email the right way from the start
• How to take advantage of the iPhone's Web features (including important tips that help you avoid frustration, and get you where you want to go fast!)
• How to download and install applications from Apple's online App Store
• The key trouble-shooting tips you've got to know
• How to get your favorite photos onto your iPhone, tips for using its built-in camera, and how to make the most of the iPhone's surprisingly powerful photo features
• The tips you've got to know to use your iPhone's built-in iPod features, including watching videos, podcasts, TV shows and movies (you're going to amazed at some of the cool things you can do)
• How to use the iPhone's built-in applications to organize your life (you'll learn things in this chapter you didn't know the iPhone could do!)
• The top 20 tips for the iPhone's phone feature that will make you fall in love with it (you'll never want to use any other phone again)
• Plus so much more, including a special bonus chapter called "iPhone Killer Tips" where you'll learn those hidden secrets that you'll be passing on to your iPhone friends (and they will be amazed!).
The iPhone Book is from Scott Kelby, the award-winning author of the smash bestseller, The iPod Book, who teams up once again with gadget guru, and iPhone authority, Terry White to put together a book that is an awful lot like the iPhone itself—simple to use and fun to learn.
In this major update to the book, Scott and Terry added even more tips, more tricks, and made it even easier by focusing on just the most useful and most requested features (without all the techno-babble) so you can start really using your iPhone today!
BONUS VIDEO: The authors put together a special in-depth video just for readers of the book where they not only share their favorite iPhone accessories, but they share even more of those hidden little time-saving tips that can make all the difference in the world.
If you've been waiting for a book that focuses on just the most important, most useful, and most fun stuff about your iPhone—you’ve found it.

Summary: Scott Kelby, the #1 best-selling Photoshop author in the world today, once again takes this book to a whole new level as he uncovers the latest, most important, and most exciting new Adobe Photoshop CS3 techniques for digital photographers. This major update to his award-winning, record-breaking book does something for digital photographers that’s never been done before–it cuts through the bull and shows you exactly “how to do it.” It’s not a bunch of theory; it doesn’t challenge you to come up with your own settings or figure it out on your own. Instead, Scott shows you step-by-step the exact techniques used by today’s cutting-edge digital photographers, and best of all, he shows you flat-out exactly which settings to use, when to use them, and why.
That’s why the previous editions of this book are widely used as the official course study guide in photography courses at college and universities around the world, and this new edition for Photoshop CS3 exposes even more of the top pros’ most closely-guarded secrets.
Learn How The Pros Do It
Each year Scott trains thousands of professional photographers on how to use Photoshop, and almost without exception they have the same questions, the same problems, and the same challenges–and that’s exactly what he covers in this book. You’ll learn:
• The sharpening techniques the pros really use.
• The pros’ tricks for fixing the most common digital photo problems fast!
• How to get great looking prints (that actually match your screen!)
• A whole chapter on the latest, most requested Photoshop special effects!
• How to color correct any photo without breaking a sweat.
• How to process Raw images, plus how to take advantage of all the new Camera Raw features in CS3!
• The portrait retouching secrets only the pros know about!
• How to add real automation to your work.
• How to show your work like a pro!
Plus a host of shortcuts, workarounds, and slick “insider” tricks to send your productivity through the roof! ISBN (Pages): 0764507060 (360)
Summary: In "Mac OS X for Dummies", Mac Daddy Bob LeVitus explains how to use the title operating system for everyday computing tasks. He does a great job of explaining--in terms well-suited to people who lack much computer experience--how to run applications, connect to the Internet, find information, and communicate with others. Plus, the Dummies format suits operating systems like Mac OS very well.
The real excitement of Mac OS X is that, beneath the surface, it's very similar to Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) Unix, an extraordinarily powerful and well-loved operating system. Apple calls this Unix core by the name of Darwin, and it comes complete with a C compiler, a whole suite of GNU-based development tools, the MySQL database, the Apache Web server, and a ton of other utilities that will open the floodgates to open-source development of software for the Macintosh.
LeVitus touches on practically none of this. True, this is a Dummies book, but it tells only half the story. The book documents Mac OS X only to the extent that it looks and runs like Mac OS 9.1. It does a good job at that, but don't turn to this book if you're interested in learning why Mac OS X is so exciting. Read LeVitus's work only if you happen to have a computer that runs Mac OS X, have very little Mac experience, and aren't interested in doing anything at the administrator or programmer levels. If you meet those criteria, you'll be very happy with this book. "--David Wall"
Topics covered: Mac OS X for the casual and inexperienced Mac user. The author explains how to manipulate files and folders, run programs, use Sherlock, and take advantage of Internet connectivity--the latter coverage deals with iTools nicely. An appendix explains how to install Mac OS X, and how to make it coexist on one machine with Mac OS 9.1.

If you've ever wondered "How'd they do that?" you're about to find out!
Inspired by the column of the same name in Photoshop User magazine, Photoshop CS Classic Effects show you exactly how to do the same special effects you see every day in magazines, on TV, in the newspaper and on the Web. These are "The Classics"--those tried and true effects that are every where--and for a lot of professional photographers and designers, these effects are their bread and butter (as you'll see inside the book). It's not the wild stuff, it's not the weird stuff--it's the stuff you can really use--the stuff clients always ask for (and expect that you'll know).
How it works
Scott Kelby, Editor of Photoshop User magazine and author of a string of bestselling Photoshop books (including Photoshop CS Down & Dirty Tricks, and The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers) takes these classic techniques and shows you how they're used by today's industry's leading professionals. You'll learn step-by-step how to build complete projects, from start to finish, so you can put these Classic Effects to work for you today. You¿ll learn classic photographic effects, type effects, commercial and advertising effects, and the special effects the pros turn to first to get the job done fast!
What Makes it a "Classic"
Over the years certain Photoshop special effects have become so popular they've become classics, much in the same way certain songs, or certain cookbook recipes have become classics. For example, if you bought a book of "Classic Recipes" you'd expect that it would include some kick butt recipes for spaghetti sauce, apple pie, buttermilk pancakes, meatloaf, tomato soup, and a wide range of classic dishes, right? Right. So would you expect to find some wild new culinary explorations from Wolfgang Puck in a Classic Recipes book? Not a chance. Instead you'd find the "meat and potatoes" recipes that are used every day by great cooks all over the world. Well, my friends, that's what you¿re holding--a book of kick butt "meat and potatoes" special effects, the same ones used by great Photoshop photographers and designers all over the world.
MTV or CBS?
Here's the thing: if your client is MTV, you can go out and do all the latest, wildest, weirdest effects and they love it. But what if your client is CBS or CNN? Try that stuff and they'll show you the door. They need a professional, clean look, and they'll expect you to know the classics and how they're used today. That's what this book is all about--teaching you the handy bag of tricks that you can use again and again.

Summary: As its title indicates, "Mac OS 9: The Missing Manual" touts itself as the guide that should have come with your copy of Apple's operating system. It certainly makes a strong case for that claim, as author David Pogue offers a wealth of information from the basics to some of OS 9's more esoteric functions.
The book is strongest in its detailed information on operating system components like the Apple menu and using OS 9's speech-recognition features. Pogue's explanations of standard, custom, and clean installations of OS 9 are similarly helpful, as is the partial list of the OS's compatibility problems. The troubleshooting guide isn't exhaustive, but the problems it does explore are handled in depth.
Unfortunately, Pogue refers too often to the pre-Mac and -Windows days when you had to type out a filename and multitasking hadn't yet become part of the computer vocabulary. It's not likely that many users today will be upgrading from a 286 DOS machine (remember those?) to an iMac. Pogue is better at explaining some of the subtle differences between Microsoft Windows and iMac conventions. Nonetheless, any Mac OS 9 user will find lots of useful information in "The Missing Manual". "--John Frederick Moore"

Summary:
Tips rule!
Have you ever noticed that in just about every Mac book, the author will include a couple of tips in each chapter (you'll usually find them in the sidebar, or at the bottom of the page in a tinted box). Sometimes it's a shortcut, a faster way to do something, or a clever workaround that just makes your life easier. People really love those tips, but there's only one problem--there's never enough of them.
That's why Scott Kelby, bestselling author and Editor-in-Chief of Mac Design magazine came up with the idea to create a book that's nothing but sidebar tips. That's right--this entire book, cover-to-cover is packed with nothing but those cool inside secrets, slick workarounds, undocumented shortcuts, and sneaky little tricks that will make you faster, better, and have more fun using Mac OS 10.4 (Tiger).
Nothing but the tips!
You're not going to find complicated descriptions on how to configure a network, how to partition a hard drive, or lines and lines of scary-looking UNIX code--instead this book is nothing but cool tips--and it's all written in Scott's casual, plain English style so you can start using these tips today. Plus, this book does the standard "sidebar tip" one better by including a clear screen capture with nearly every tip, so you can see exactly how it's all done.
Not just tips. Killer tips!
To be in this book, every tip has got to be a "Killer Tip" (the kind of tip that makes you nod and smile, then call all your Mac buddies to tune them up with your new-found power). Scott's a total "hip hound" (in fact, it was Scott who created the entire smash-bestselling "Killer Tips" book series), and he doesn't hold anything back--it's all here from the man who literally "wrote the book" on cool productivity tips.If you like doing things the easy way, if you like getting twice the work done in half the time, and if you get a kick out of knowing all the "inside secrets and undocumented shortcuts" that will wow your friends and coworkers, you're absolutely going to love this book.

Summary: Reviewed by: Curt Blanchard, Tucson Macintosh Users GroupI'm a manual kind of guy, by this I mean I actually read 'em. Hardware and software manufacturers are not making manuals the way they once did. When you pay big bucks for something, you expect carefully researched and clearly written instructions and frequently these days, you don't get either. One of my hottest pet peeves is paying for nicely boxed software and getting only a CD with an onscreen manual. I paid more than a grand for my Mac and it came with a skimpy 48 page set-up guide. I had to pay another $30.00 for "The Missing Manual" (by Pogue Press/O'Reilly, a truly excellent resource, by-the-way) to get what I should have gotten in the first place.Having grumped about all this, it's hard to fault Apple for not supplying an iTunes manual when they provide the application for free! iTunes is a fabulous, feature-rich application that I use every single day, but not all of its features are immediately obvious or apparent. So, in comes Bob LeVitus to fill the voids. His "Little iTunes Book" is a goldmine of informational nuggets that will enhance your user experience and listening enjoyment. I've always liked LeVitus' writing, it's light-hearted but concise and to the point. The book is only a couple hundred pages and it's not something you sit down and read cover to cover. It's a reference book divided into logical topics - Burning CDs, Managing Playlists, Internet Radio, iPods, the Music Store and much more.My only quibble is the author's assertion that downloading shared music from the internet without paying for it "may or may not be legal" and he devotes pages to the use of peer-to-peer networks. To my way of thinking, it is illegal without question. To be fair, he does agree that it is unfair to the artists. Apple got it right with the Music Store - download to your heart's content for 99 cents per song or $9.99 for most CDs - legally. The Little iTunes Book is a highly recommended reference book full of good information and subtle tips. I'd judge it to be aimed at the Beginner through Intermediate level. The section on Visual Effects alone is worth the price.

Summary: Thank goodness for the digital camera. People like me with a lousy eye can take hundreds of photos and experiment until our eyes fall out and get a couple of gems. Despite my left-handedness, I don't have a natural eye for photography, art, or anything of the sort. It all went into writing. With three kids, photos are important to me as I want to take capture many times of their lives so we may reflect on them with a visual aid. A good photo does make a difference. Again, three kids, who has time to read a book or take a class to become one with a camera? This pocket guide fills that need.It has three chapters with quick reference tables in the back of the book. It's small enough to fit into your camera bag, laptop case, briefcase, suitcase, or jacket pocket. The chapters address what is it, what do I do, and how do I questions. What is it covers the basic, intermediate, and advanced features found on digital cameras. It's the shortest chapter as once you get familiar with the features, you won't need the chapter anymore and you still have roughly 85 pages of material to support you when you're out there trying to capture the world you see.Once you've conquered the buttons and figured out what most of the symbols and modes mean, you're ready to dig deeper into the features and gain control of the camera with answers to your what does it do types of questions relating to exposure and flash compensation, white balance, ISO speed, and resolution. The last chapter is more free flowing as you and the camera have become one. Get tips on taking outdoor and group shots including sporting events where players are moving fast. Capture kids, travel spots, and wedding memories with class as kids grow up, you may not return to the same places, and weddings happen only once (we would hope unless it's a renewal of vows).Adding this book to your camera bag is a step toward to better pictures and better understanding of those fancy photography terms, which aren't a big deal after you read author Derrick Story's simple and clear explanations.

It is very much geared towards beginners, although I am quite familiar with the Mac platform, I did find a few items in this book very useful, and pertinent. It also contained a couple of things I never knew. Mr. Steinberg's book is well-written, in easy-to-understand "One Hour Lessons". I would recommend this book to ANYONE new to computers, and even to seasoned Mac user's who want to have a handy reference availible for when problems arise.

Summary: Very easy to follow, not overly techie. RW & JT have a good writing style and aptitude for clear explanations. The book's illustrations (screen dumps) are well chosen and relevant to the text instructions and explanations. A good teaching tool for IT's to provide for staff or clients.Luckily I read most of the chapters before my co-worker's permanently "borrowed" it. Now I need to buy another copy. Hope RW & JT are busy writing the next edition for the recent upgrades to some of the iLife apps announced at '04 MacWorld. I'll buy that book also as soon as it's available. Howevery, most iApps have have had only minor changes to them with Panther (and the new iLife), so this current book is still very useful and well worth purchasing.

Summary: Mac OS X: The Missing Manual ranks among the best books to have at your side as you explore the latest Macintosh operating system as an everyday user who wants to get some work done, have a bit of fun, and feel part of the Mac community. David Pogue--a respected Mac authority and longtime author on the subject--is the perfect guide on such a quest, as his Mac knowledge is profound and his ability to explain facts and procedures considerable. The second edition of this popular book covers Mac OS X 10.2 and all of its many new features, including Sherlock 3, iCal, iSync, and firewalling. There's coverage of .Mac online services, as well.Pogue writes really well, so his prose is a treat to read and most readers will appreciate his occasional page-long straight prose passages. More often, though, the wisdom in this book comes in the form of annotated procedures and bulleted lists, as well as notes and tips. There are also two highly handy "Where'd It Go?" glossaries: one for longtime Mac users (this one answers such questions as where the Apple Extras folder is) and one for Windows users (to explain, for example, the equivalent of Ctrl-Alt-Delete on the Mac). Unlike most books about Mac OS X, this one explores its UNIX-like underpinnings (the Apple implementation is called Darwin) pretty thoroughly. However, based on the logic that if you wanted to use UNIX, you would, Pogue emphasizes the traditional, graphical Mac interface over the Terminal window. If you want an in-depth treatment of Darwin and know something about UNIX already, have a look at Mac OS X for Unix Geeks. --David Wall Topics covered: How to use Mac OS X 10.2 and its immediate predecessors. This is a user-level book, concerned with managing files, folders, media, users, and hardware. Lots of attention goes to the operating system's special features, including the "i" series of applications and the .Mac online services.

Summary: This is the third edition of this book, and this really should come with every Mac. Earlier editions of this book were very good, and this one is even better. In honesty, I haven't yet finished it, but that is almost a feature, because I find that I need to read it page-by-page.This book is written in an easy, converational style. David Pogue answers your questions and often -anticipates- them. He clearly has a grasp of the subject matter and his readers. The only flaw in this book is that tidbits are on every page, and if you skim the book, you are going to overlook useful things. The book has to be read, sometimes almost line-by-line to catch everything he presents. This is okay though, you'll WANT to read every line. One sample of the writing is worth repeating. When David describes "Expose", a new Window navigation system in OS 10.3, he says, "In essence, Apple has finally realized that the Desktop really ISN'T "just another program." If the layer of open programs is the atmosphere, the Finder is the earth below." Almost poetry, in a computer manual! If you only get one book to learn about Mac OSX, this is it.

Summary: Scott Kelby has written a killer book for OS X Jaguar users. How often do you open a compute manual and immediately read all of the sidebars? After all that is where the nitty gritty information is. Mac OS X Killer Tips is nothing but sidebars - two hundred sixty-nine pages of sidebars. The book is well organized into chapters which cover everything from windows, icons, cool tips, cheap tips, trouble shooting and everything in-between. It doesn't have to be read in any particular order, but I would certainly recommend reading all of it. At first the thought of learning all of those tips is a bit overwhelming; however I have a system which works pretty well for me. I keep a stack of sticky notes or flags handy. When I find a tip that looks like one I could really like to learn I mark it. Be careful or you will have sticks on every page. Then at the conclusion of a chapter, I choose the two or three which I like best and use them until they are second nature. Then I look for the next two or three. At this rate it might take a while to master the "killer tips" but the book has already made my life easier. I highly recommend it for novice or expert.Just for fun read the introduction to the book and then the introductions to each chapter. They are amusing and will give you a chuckle or two. And if you want to have even more fun, read Macintosh - The Naked Truth, also by Scott Kelby.

Summary: The latest release of the venerable Mac OS makes only incremental improvements on its predecessor, but it's worth remembering that the predecessor was Mac OS X--a watershed release that incorporated a UNIX kernel for the first time. In Mac OS X 10.1: Visual QuickStart Guide, Maria Langer makes incremental improvements to her book on Mac OS X, documenting the new features of version 10.1, notably support for DVD movies and easy CD burning from within the Finder. It's nothing earthshaking, but this is the version of the book you'll want if you're unfamiliar with Mac OS and have just purchased a Macintosh. Langer's book is one of the best Mac OS beginners' primers around. The Visual QuickStart style, which relies heavily on the close integration of text and graphics to convey information, suits Mac OS well. In the one-page spread on burning CDs, for example, Langer presents a nine-step process that's illustrated by no fewer than five screen shots. Every time she references a dialog box or menu in the text of her instructions, there's a picture of the relevant interface item to the side, so it's always clear what you're supposed to be seeing. This sort of picture-heavy tutorial is typical of coverage throughout the book. --David Wall Topics covered: Everything an everyday user (as opposed to a programmer or network administrator) can do with Mac OS X 10.1. The fundamentals of file management with the Finder, launching applications, printing, connecting to the Internet, and using Sherlock are all covered. There's even a little AppleScript coverage for Mac users who want to do a little automation.

Robin said elsewhere that the Macintosh brought about the greatest revolution in printing since Gutenberg. She was in the forefront of this printing revolution, giving people information once known and used primarily by printers, teaching graphic design and typography to the newly developed industry of desktop publishing. Some day we won't need Robin's book, because people will have forgotten the conventions used on a typewriter to show emphasis and the limitations of a typewriter's keyboard and mono-spaced type, and their computers will automatically provide smart quotes and em dashes. The book begins by introducing the reader to the Mac OS and proceeds on to what one can do with an iMac. Chapters cover using a web browser and AppleWorks, an integrated application suite. My mum recently bought an iMac and, being a novice user, found this book to be very helpful. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone with an iMac, novice and expert alike.

Summary: The iPod is the best personal music player available. Its ease of use, and enormous storage capability, are possible because of the software written for the device, the iTunes utility, and to the fact that the iPod is basically a portable hard drive. This valuable 350 page how-to book will guide both new users and experienced hacks to utilize the capabilities of the iPod, as well as the iTunes utility, to the maximum. This is not a supplemental manual. It is a stand-alone reference that will walk the reader through the basics of the iPod and iTunes. It will also, in simple language and clear graphics, explain how to utilize iPod as a PDA, a data storage unit, and even a recording device. The author, very thoughtfully, provides not only thorough coverage of topic for Mac-only users, but also includes detailed guidance for Windows users as well as Mac OS 9 users. For Windows users, utilities that can be linked with the iPod are explained as clearly as Mac utilities. And as important as explaining what various capabilities are, describing the limitations to each utility are often just as detailed. There are generous amounts of figures and other graphics for both Mac and Windows utilities. What I particularly liked about many of the the illustrations was that layered windows, and menus for several steps, were shown in a single figure. This makes it even easier for "visual" learners to master the instructions.Perhaps the part of the book I was most pleased to find was in the appendix. For both iTunes and Music Match Jukebox Plus, every menu (dozens of them) are explained in detail. I think this is essential for novice users to have this kind of guidance, and I have not found it in other manuals and "how to" books.Disappointments were few and minor. Though I suspect there are no substantial differences with using the iPod Mini, I would have liked to have this stated one way or the other. Also, I would like to have been instructed in how I could have set up a separate iTunes account on my Mac, so others who use my computer would find it easier to download only their music into their own iPod. Finally, marker tabs on the side of the book may make it easier to find chapters more quickly. These, though, pale in comparison to the benefits of buying this "must have" book.

It is another addition to the growing set of "Hacks" books published by O'Reilly Media. The 100 tips and tools are organized into 8 chapters covering camera attachments, daytime and nighttime photo secrets, flash photography, photo projects, computer-based photo processing and organizing, and a special section on camera-phone photography. A number of hacks cover traditional photographic techniques not new to digital photography but useful to any photographer who wants to improve one or two steps above mere snapshooting. The bulk of them, however, relate specifically to the new digital photography world. The most interesting are those pertaining to camera-phones which have outsold regular digital cameras in 2002. The author demonstrates how to get the best use out of camera-phones despite their limitations in resolution, power, and features. Hack #75 explains that the prime value of camera-phones is in their immediacy allowing unique opportunities to obtain images. This hack reinterprets the traditional photography maxim that the "best camera" is the one you have in your hand when a special event is occurring.Hack #79 cleverly shows how one can communicate in a foreign country by displaying pre-loaded images in your camera to the natives in lieu of learning and speaking a foreign language. Everyone will understand the meaning of the photos. Load up your disk with images of toilets, taxi cabs, and cheeseburgers! #83 discusses how to set up and run a photo mo-blog - which is the mobile version of a traditional blog site. Portrait-taking amateurs will learn how to improve their people shots with pro-style lighting effects (#41-43) and Photoshop manipulations like whitening teeth and eliminating red eye and skin blemishes (#16, 69-70).Learn how to add music to movies and slideshows (#61) and analyze meta-data (EXIF format) contained in most digital photo formats (#28).This book doesn't have the natural writing flow of Mr. Story's "Pocket Guide", as the Hacks were contributed by a large handful of experts, but it is a nice resource for those many digital photographers who need guidance or inspiration in using their cameras.

Summary: Maybe i like this book so much because it synergetically combines so well two things that this author loves - photography and writing. As a life-long film photographer, now making the switch to a digital camera, i'm finding all i need to know in this book, to get the right camera and accessories, digital processing tools and work flow and to use them for the greatest creative power. It's unusual to find discussions and examples of practical work flow. It's much more common to see tools or effects discussed with no insight as to why, when or where to use each of them. Photoshop is a case in point - a huge collection of powerful image processing tools, with hardly a hint as to what to do with them. This book (with its many, many color photos) gives you the why's, the when's and the where's, while staying focused on the practical implications of everything for the photographers daily work.I was happy to see that effects on the photographer's wallet are also considered, as Ken follows two parallel tracks through the book. One is for the pro, who's tools must be the best available in spite of the price, and another for the "prosumer", who must often find the least expensive solution that will get a job done "well enough".Another thing i like is the balance between camera, computer and software chapters. This is not just another Photoshop book, though it does go into considerable depth on that prime digital photographer's tool.In the interest of honesty, i'd like to disclose that i am a friend of the author's (which is why i know what a good photographer and writer he is). But don't let that stop you from having a serious look into this fine learning tool.

Summary: Standard equipment on the iMac, AppleWorks 5 helps you complete almost any general office task or personal project. Whether you're writing a letter or creating a budget, AppleWorks (formerly called ClarisWorks) includes an application that can help you. AppleWorks 5 for Dummies shows you how to get the most out of the iMac's suite of productivity software. The key to using AppleWorks efficiently begins with familiarizing yourself with the interface elements that all of its programs have in common. That's the first order of business in AppleWorks 5 for Dummies, an organizational decision that helps streamline the remainder of the book. After covering the suite as a unit, the authors proceed to cover AppleWorks's word processor, spreadsheet, and database programs in succession. They also take care to explain how (and why) to embed tables, graphs, pictures, and multimedia elements in various kinds of AppleWorks documents. Throughout, authors LeVitus and Shadovitz use the Dummies style to maximum effect, communicating a lot of detailed information without overwhelming the reader or getting bogged down in unimportant details. They present most of the information in stepped procedures, so it's likely you'll find the section that explains precisely what you need to do to achieve a particular result. --David Wall

Summary: Book: "Apple Training Series: iLife '04" (377 pages)Author: Michael Rubinpublisher: Peachpit Press, 1249 Eighth St., Berkeley, CA 94710published: 2004price: $29.99Phone number of company: 1-800-283-9444Pros: easy to read, nicely organized, great color illustrations, excellent index, overall very helpful for the beginner or advances iLife user Cons: no real cons; ideally, I would like to have seen a second CD included that would have allowed people with OS 9 to get a sample of the iLife lessons This book was of particular interest to me to review since I will soon be using Apple's iLife '04. This an awesome program with 5 subparts: itunes, iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, and GarageBand. I wanted a good overview of all five, and was very pleased with what I found. It was easy reading, and its organization, a series of 14 lessons, allows you to learn at your own pace. The book also comes with a CD that you play to work along with the lessons. For me, I had to skip that part for now but certainly will be using it next month after I get my G-5 and begin using OS X (required for iLife). But even without it, the book alone is great for introducing the power and relative simplicity of iLife '04. The great illustrations and index also help a beginner, and would be very useful too to advanced users of iLife. I particularly liked the nice organization and clear writing style of the book, with each section ending with a review of what you learned. This book is set up as if you were three different people learning about the various parts of iLife '04, namely a parent with a 12-year-old daughter, a high school student, and a small-business owner. Through those people and their needs, you get a real hands-on understanding of what the program can do for you. In all, you learn to 1) create custom CDs and play them on an iPod or a regular stereo system; 2) organize and use still images from your digital camera to create great photos and books of photos, plus slide shows; and 3) create movie DVDs combining still photos with music, special effects, titles, narration, music, and more. Finally, you learn to upload your slide shows and videos to the Web and burn DVDs. Additionally, there are nice "extras" at various logical places in the book, like tips on using your digital camcorder.Below are the names of the 14 lessons, which further show the progressive nature of the learning process this fine book offers. In all, I would highly recommend this book. It is a great learning tool and well worth the money.Lesson 1: Making a Custom CD from your music collectionLesson 2: DJ a Party with your iPodLesson 3: Shooting Digital Snapshots and putting them in your MacLesson 4: Organizing and Refining your photosLesson 5: Printing and sharing your photosLesson 6: Adding motion and effects for a dynamic slide showLesson 7: Making a time-lapse videoLesson 8: Shooting and assembling a very simple movieLesson 9: Adding narration to your dynamic slide showLesson 10: Shooting with Hollywood-style techniques for better videosLesson 11: Editing and finishing a professional-looking movieLesson 12: Creating unique music for your projectsLesson 13: Putting your slide show on the InternetLesson 14: Burning DVDs of your videos and slide shows

Summary: I've been entertaining Photoshop "how-to" books since the big old "Classroom In a Book" version 3 and can only say that now I'm just as excited about Photoshop as when I got that first tutorial book. I've been through a lot of them since then, and nothing has ever done as much justice to this awesome program as Adobe Photoshop CS One-on-One! Some of the things covered I knew, but the way those famliar things are unveiled are once again motivational. Not to mention the things I didn't know about. Software upgrades happen quite frequently, and at times we need upgrading as well. You owe it to yourself, if you are the least bit serious about this app, to work with it and reap the rewards for doing so.O'Reiley - (hint-hint) the one-on one series could be a good thing for numerous titles and series, I think. By series, I mean - - (for example) CSS One-on-One (beginner to intermediate), CSS One-on-One (intermediate to advanced), etc. Same thing with Dreamweaver, Illustrator, Flash etc. BUT ONLY IF - they are done with the same care, authority, and visually supportive print work, organization and attention to detail as Adobe Photoshop CS One-on-One! Anyway, that's my review, way to go Deke! I'm in love with Photoshop once again!!
