D&D Miniatures Top 8 History

Back to Guy's Page

All of the D&D Miniatures Championship events cut to the top-8 after swiss and hold single elimination final rounds for those top-8 players. The following lists show the top-8 players for all of the D&D Miniatures Championship events, through April 2007. Players' message boards user IDs are included for those that I knew or that I could find.

Players are listed in order of final post-elimination round placing. "S" represents a player who made it to the semifinals, and "Q" represents a player who made it to the quarterfinals. Where the information is available, a player's position at the end of swiss is listed in parenthesis. For players with more than one Top-8 finish, asterisks show the total number of top-8 finishes for that player.

2005 Limited Championship Notes: Rodger Shanklin (from Maine) had enough points to make top-8, but he had to drop from the event in order to make his plane flight. His drop allowed Paul Grasshoff to move up from 9th place into 8th. Paul went on to win that Championship.

2007 Constructed Championship Notes: Because there weren't enough maps to support all the players at once, the 2007 Constructed Championships were broken into two flights, with 54 and 56 players respectively. The top-4 from each flight would comprise the top-8. In the placings above, A and B indicate the player's flight. Michael Pozsgay (from Illinois) had enough points to make top-4 in his flight, but he dropped from the event in order to play the Dreamblade 50K Championship. His drop allowed Guillaume Garant-Rousseau to move up from 5th place into 4th in that flight for his second top-8 appearance.

California Dominance? 19 of those 48 positions are taken up by California players. 14 alone are from Southern California. 5 Champions are from California, with 3 from Southern California. This is at least partially skewed because the 2005 Limited Championship was held at Gen Con So Cal, which didn't draw too many people from out of state. (5 of 8 spots at that event were California players.)

What counts as a Championship? To be on the above list, an event must be the one true DDM Championship for the given format, and players must qualify for it in advance. The event must produce the unequivocal DDM Champion for that format and that year, who gets to work with WotC R&D to create a mini or a map.

Other Major Events

The following are not true Championship events as described above, but they were either named "Championship" or they were the primary WotC-run DDM event at a major convention. Events get added to this list only by my whim. To be considered for this list, most of the following need to be true: The event is the primary DDM event at a major convention, features a variety of players from far and wide, is advertised on the WotC web site and/or run by WotC, has a K-value higher than 16, has a cut to the top-4 or top-8, and has deep prize support including repaint trophies. (The last-chance qualifiers for the true Championships aren't listed because those events weren't the primary DDM event at their respective conventions -- the Championships themselves were.)

Anaheim Mayhem: Gen Con So Cal 2004 (see my report) featured two "Mayhem" events which used a 100-point sealed format follwed by draft finals for the top-4 finishers. As with the Championship events, these Mayhem events featured repaint trophies.

Blood War Draft Championship: Gen Con So Cal 2006 featured a draft format "championship" using Blood War boosters, followed by draft finals for the top-4 finishers. As with the Championship events, this event featured repaint trophies.
