On the BBC Radio London breakfast show this morning to promote the book - which now has a second positive review on Amazon, thanks for asking - and got home to find that Twitter had signed me up to its new beta 'retweet' service.

I suppose I should declare my own interest; I don't get paid to write this blog at all but I'm hoping it will encourage people to buy my book, preferably through a link I put up so I get not only royalties but a kickback from being an Amazon Associate.

I'm not puffing myself up trying to be the big I-am, but I know for a fact that when I tell people I'm busy with, for example, media training or speaking, I get considered for more work in a similar vein.

I haven't actually audited the male/female balance of my online contacts but I can assure you I'd remain male regardless of the outcome of any such check; I don't honestly think the sexuality of my contacts would have any bearing on my own either.

We'll be publishing books on employers, by all means, but our main focus will be to film videos of participating companies, interview experts (we have two agreed so far as you'll see on the website and are talking to more, from interest groups as well as HR organisations) and upload them on YouTube.

I’ll disregard the one that complains that the Observer has a ludicrously gay agenda, I’m a straight man and hadn’t noticed so it couldn’t be that pronounced, and even if it were it would probably do OK financially if every gay man and woman bought it and responded to the ads.

In my book, out in October in case I hadn’t mentioned it at least 100 times, I advise readers to put some sort of clause in the contract about social networking; nothing as draconian as I’ve reported here but something that states people should be sensible.

You could have different levels of expert - I’d be very pleased if my own pockets of knowledge of the field could have some sort of qualifier like ‘follower and expert commentator’ whereas Jacobs and her ilk might come out as ‘consultant for coal-face social networking’, for example.

So to find whatever it was that interested them I have to receive their Tweet - no problem there - then click through to some daft aggregator site, work out how to bypass that, end up on their Facebook profile and eventually, very eventually, click through to a picture of a dog that can walk on its hind legs or something.

I’m still sorry he’s had to step down and hope this will prompt the publication and development of some sensible guidelines on how these things should be handled - but this case illustrates not that social networks can affect an innocent bystander adversely, but that we’re only just starting to understand the role these networks are going to play in public life and our interaction with it.

Probably the most interesting thing about the case reported in the Guardian, in which a man in Korea has been acquitted of spreading falsehoods on the web, is the way it highlights the differences in culture and emphasises that the Web might make us look at the same thing but through many different sets of eyes.
