THE
COMPANY
and the PERSON behind it.
After 18 years serving the informational, educational and promotional needs of community sectors in Ontario, Cuba and Chile, GRYPHON media productions returned to the hometown of its owner in 2005. From the local perspective this was a new business venture.
The Company is registered
in Nova Scotia as GRYPHON media productions, a Sole Proprietorship under
the responsibility of Madeline Yakimchuk. The company continues to emphasize audiovisual projects related to culture and identity, and to the promotion of non-profit community groups.
Madeline is the producer, director, creative director, designer, and specialist in digital postproduction behind the company. Her experience in community, intercultural and economic development, combined with decades of audiovisual production, allow her to serve the needs of Cape Breton’s diverse communities.
Services provided to clients since returning to Cape Breton have included co-production and project development of documentaries for community groups, video training with youth, 3D and 2D animation, as well as concept-to-completion of over 20 informational / promotional shorts.
Madeline is proud to note that she has been sought out by off-island clients, and has worked with them without the need to migrate from this beautiful island.

Alma
Fiel
Video
Clip
A video clip from the singer-songwriter Alejandro
Contarini. The passionate voice of Alejandro
sings an exorcism of love, sung with
the mastery of a creator tormented by the search for that special
soul, that soul which would be the reflection of a most complete
love… and which only exists in some other dimension. The piano,
the painful search, the magic of love, unite to permit that “Soul” finds
her path in this time and space… Only in Putaendo (a town whose
name is said to mean Deep Waters) could such an encounter take place.

The
Guitarrons of Pirque
2000
- documentary - Hi-8 Digital
At the onset we are introduced
to the magic of the Song to the Divine,
expertly interpreted by the last remaining masters
of the 25 string guitarron. From there we are joyfully
carried along to a country party, where, between cheers,
rancheras, cuecas and payas, we enjoy a parade of the
best of the Song to the Mundane. The
protagonists talk about their lives and, matter-of-factly,
testify to the state of this aspect of our cultural
identity. The sound track was recorded live on location.
The final edition attempts to illustrate the magic
that enveloped us that night in Santa Rita, carried
away by the decimas and the warmth of the bonfire. (Available
in Spanish or Spanish w/ English subtitle

Seeing
from the Heart
(Part
1 of The Rumba Trilogy)
1997
- Video Clip - Video Betacam
Seeing
from the Heart is
an audio-visual invitation to observe the universe
that surrounds us from a multifaceted perspective.
It is as if our eyes and the eyes of our forebears
review a memory from the collective subconscious...
a memory that is projected on a gigantic screen in
the interior of ourselves. Seeing from the Heart is
more than a video clip, it is a call to listen to our
own music, to relate to our own environment and to
look at each other beyond our skin colour... more precisely,
to look from the heart. (Lyrics
in Spanish, Music Universal)

|
|
My
Solar
(Part
2 of The Rumba Trilogy)
1997
- Video Clip - Betacam
My
Solar is
a passionate homage to Mercedes Valdés, one
of the most important investigators and masters of
Cuban urban folklore, and in particular, of the Rumba
in Cuba. But in addition, My Solar is
a passionate cry, a protest against the forgetfulness
and abandonment of the rumba tradition, and the symbols
that represent it. The setting is an ancient solar
(rooming house) called El Capitolio (The Capitol).
This is the birthplace of Mercedes Valdés, today
on the verge of collapse and without even a plaque
to mark its historical importance. The plot is the
daily life of the personalities - living or remembered
- who naggingly wander the streets and rooming houses
of Havana. (Lyrics
in Spanish, Music Universal)

|
|
Central
Habana
1996
- Documentary - Video S-VHS
Imagine
a community-based and participatory urban development project
in the midst of economic recession
the sweat and
the nostalgia of the finished project remain in our memories,
as well as the rum and the coffee of happiness, the drum
beat of hope... probably some part of our souls continue
to inhabit the sensuous porches and verandas of Central
Havana. (Spanish)

METAMORPHASIS TRANSITION
I arrived to Chile, from CUba, in 1997, in the midst of a painful transition from military dictatorship to democracy. The metamorphasis of the four faces depicted in this video, starting with the dictator, was created in that ambience. The intro text, in spanish, ready... "speaking of transition..."

LET'S MAKE A VIDEO program |
|
Did you know that with 5-10 youth, in just five half-day sessions of hands-on community video training, you could end up with a 30-60 second promotional video about your centre, an upcoming community event or an issue of importance to your mandate that you would be proud to post to your website, or even broadcast on local community TV? This workshop will do that for you, in addition to providing a valuable experience for the participants, and adding something new to your upcoming youth programming schedule.
One of our groups, the Eskasoni Media Project, produced this video, which was later aired on APTN.
Program easily adapted for women's centres or other community groups. Contact us for further information. |

Ultraje
de un Noviciado
(Power
and Garbage)
2001-Documentary-
Hi-8 Digital Video
A Project with Cinematografías Australes
It
is obvious that an organised community would never permit
the imposed installation of a landfill site within its territory.
How is it possible that a government institution could approve
such an installation, regardless of the consequences for
the environment and for the residents? How is it possible
to accept that a private company puts its profit above the
health of a community, and of the survival of the planet?
Ultraje
de un Noviciado is a documentary about the dignity
of a people. It is a small step toward discovering and understanding
the relationship between Power and Garbage in the world of
today. (Spanish)
