One night last summer I was sitting at the picnic table under the big tree when a guy came limping through the courtyard and up the stairs to knock at #29. Dawn, a young pretty girl, lives there.
I didn't think too much of it. I'd seen the guy visit Dawn before. His name is Kirk. He was limping badly but I thought it was some kind of sprain. The urgency and note of consternation in Dawn's voice after she let him in changed my mind. He had something much more serious and recent than a sprain. Kirk had been stabbed in the thigh.
The police and parameds showed up in minutes. Some time later they came out of the apartment and fortunately Kirk was moving under his own power. They waited until he got to the bottom of the stairs to put him on a rolling stretcher and wheel him out. Dawn followed. She stopped for a minute to explain what had happened then went out to her car to drive to the hospital.
Kirk was attacked by two Mexican kids. He is about 6'3", a body builder, martial artist, and looks it --- which was a little disconcerting to the rest of us. If they'd attack him they'd attack anybody. He had his stereo cranked up when he parked and the kids must have wanted it. The police seemed to think they didn't realize what they were getting into when they approached the car. When a giant stepped out they had already gone too far to back down. Kirk kicked one of them in the face and that's when the other one stabbed him with a screwdriver. He punched that one in the chest and they both ran. Kirk didn't stop at the first apartment and ask for help. He limped all the way down the corridor and up the stairs to the one person here that he knew.
We were all very worried at the time. What if a gang was moving in on our block? There may very well be gangs all around, but we have had no more attempted robberies or stabbings.
