On the weekend following the 1993 Western Applied Dynamics Users' Society Conference at China Lake I attended the annual post ADIUS cabin weekend at June Lake. Every year for the past dozen or so years the luminaries of the simulation world meet at June Lake to rest, eat, fish, hike, eat, gamble, tell lies, and eat. I did my share of each and every one before the weekend was over. (Except fishing. If I put a line in the water I'd jinx everybody else.) Chuck Estes invited me. Never mind that he's a card sharp on the lookout for an easy mark and took away all my money before the weekend was over. It was worth every penny.Friday morning I slipped a book into the waistband of the back of my jeans and started up the hill behind the cabins. It was a long hard climb to the top. I stopped to rest and caught some movement out of the corner of my eye. It was a bear. Lucky for me it saw me first and was already headed in the opposite direction. I changed mind about hiking that direction. I decided to sit with my back against a big rock and read for awhile. Finally, my mind fortified by a good dose of great literature (B grade science fiction), I set out again, veering south of the bear's path. I saw a good number of deer and bear tracks in the sand on the flat top of the ridge. I also found a pond. I kept my eye out for the bear of course, my heart on a hair trigger, but I didn't see it again.
The bear came down to the cabins that night and Charley Moore ran into it by the trash bins. I don't know who was the more startled, Charley or the bear. Charley hails from Texas, and doesn't take nonsense of any kind, from man or from bear.
I spent the day Saturday touring Yosemite with Dr. Robert Howe, retired, from the University of Michigan. One of the top names in simulation.
