The Chapman (558
tons) was built at Whitby in 1777. The ship was rebuilt in 1811
and had major repairs in 1815. The ship was sheathed in copper ca 1814. The Chapman is known to have made at least three voyages to Australia as a convict transport: 14 Mar 1817 - 26 Jul 1817 from Cork, Ireland to Sydney, NSW (master John Drake) (200 male convicts embarked, 186 landed in Sydney) 6 Apr 1824 - 27 Jul 1824 from England to Van Diemans Land (master John Milbank, surgeon Jas Hamilton) (180 male convicts embarked, no deaths, all landed at Hobart) 10 Apr 1826 - 7 Oct 1826 from London to Van Diemans Land (master John Milbank, surgeon Jos H Hughs) (100 male convicts embarked, 2 escaped, no deaths, 98 landed at Hobart) arrived Sydney, NSW on 4 Nov 1826 |
