Biography
Wilhelm Conrad Lehmann was born at Tanunda on 28 April 1882. He
was the first born son of Christian
Friedrich Wilhelm Lehmann and Amalie Bertha Lehmann (nee Ahrens) .
He was baptized at the Bethany Lutheran Church on 7 May 1882 by Pastor
G. A. Heidenreich.. His sponsors were Gottlieb Lehmann, Henry Ahrens
and Caroline Lehmann. Pastor Heidenreich also confirmed him on 31
October 1895 at Bethany.
On 16 April 1915, he married Louise Hulda Henschke,
Rev. H. F. W. Roehrs, officiated at the ceremony at Bethany. Louise
Hulda was born at Krondorf on 29 April 1892, the daughter of Johann Gottfried Henschke and Marie
Elisabeth Henschke (nee Koch) . She was baptised on 29 May
1892 at Bethany, her sponsors were Phillipp Schultz, Gottlob Schmidt,
Hulda Schultz and Mith. Kernig.
Conrad and Hulda had six daughters and three
sons. One daughter (Melva Louise) died as an infant. Conrad
and Hulda lived on the Vine Vale road near Angaston.

Conrad was a
vigneron. They had a vineyard in three separate blocks about half a
mile apart. In the early years, Conrad exempted his children from
school for four weeks so they could help to pick the grapes.
Conrad also pruned vines for W Salter & Son and had a contract with
the South Australian Railways to plough firebreaks from Angaston and
Truro through to Gawler. He used a three furrow
plough pulled by two horses.
Hulda milked cows and had fowls, which helped to pay
for the groceries. Mr Mutton used to come around once a week with his
buggy and horses to collect the eggs and butter in exchange for
groceries. The cows
were kept in a hilly paddock where the children had to chop out the
salvation
jane so that the grass could grow. In later years Hulda's mother lived
with
them until she died (12 December 1931) and was buried at the
Krondorf
cemetery
alongside her husband.
Hulda died aged 55 on 15 October 1947. In ca.1954
Conrad moved to 6 Schilling St Angaston with his daughter Dora as
housekeeper.
He died on May 10 1959 aged 77. Rev. H. F. W. Proeve officiated at his
funeral in Angaston on 11 May 1959. He was buried at Angaston cemetery
alongside
his wife.
