This is what you are first treated to while
waiting in line to board the bus that shuttles you across the street from the
parking area to Elvis' mansion, Graceland. Surreal, and very strange. Old Elvis
movies and concert video emanating from the back of a truck on lawn. The perfect
kitsch. I loved it. The Graceland experience
is pretty much what one might expect: a tour in atrocious interior decorating of
the 1970s. The mansion has been done up like Elvis had it in the Seventies and
boy howdy did his taste in furniture (and wallpaper and paint and carpet) stink.
Really really stink. Again--the perfect kitsch and I love it, but to think that
it wasn't kitsch back then makes me shudder. it was hard getting interior photos
to come out because they ban flash photography there (for good reason!), but
here is a sample:
The "Jungle Room" and
TV room (3 TVs):
The really Ugly Billiard Room and the
kitchen:
And then of course, those god-awful
jumpsuits:
My favorite room, however, was the one
with all the memorabilia from his
movies:
