Memphis Blues and BBQ

We went to Memphis last weekend and saw blues on the street (that would be Beale Street ) and put pork bbq in the belly. Big Jerry (who has seemingly put a lot of bbq in his belly) and his band were righteous. We bought his overpriced and underproduced CD and got to have it signed by him to Safa. Our Hotel was around the corner from the action on Beale Street, which was loud even for a Monday night. We ate here:

And ate the next day at the above-pictured Jim Neely's Interstate Bar-B-Q on the way back from Graceland . The interview with owner Jim Neely on the Southern Foodways BBQ Oral History Project website is a must.
Memphis was pretty cool as a city--more southern-feeling than Nashville, which some attribute to the Mississippi River connection to the Delta and the history of the large population of freed slaves that settled here during and after the Civil War. I'd definitely go back, and probably will when my mom visits in November. But I think she'll be more interested in Graceland, which I'll fill y'all in on later...
