C2GSApplet is a Java™ applet that operates on standard AMPTE/CCE/CHEM survey plots. C2GSApplet (1) inverts a white-on-black color scheme so the new scheme is black-on-white and (2) changes RGB colors to grayscale.
I wrote this applet to convert some color images to grayscale in order to minimize publication costs on a forthcoming paper. When you run the applet you will see that a standard NTSC color-to-brightness conversion puts white in the middle of the converted colorbar at yellow, so custom changes were needed in order to achieve a smoothly varying grayscale. The basic structure of this applet comes from an example (ImageFilterDemo.java) in the book "Java 2: The Complete Reference, Third Edition" by Patrick Naughton and Herbert Schildt [Osborne/McGraw-Hill, Berkeley, 1999]. I added the about button and subclassed RGBImageFilter to invert the foreground and background colors and convert the CHEM colorbar to grayscale.
C2GSApplet is very simple and easy to use.
First, you need to download and unzip C2GSApplet_f.zip.
Then, each time you want to see a converted image (you can get the color images at the AMPTE/CCE Website, see below), you need to
(b) open (or drag&drop) the file "C2GSapplet.html" using your browser.
What will you see?
When the C2GSApplet starts up, you will see an AMPTE/CCE/CHEM image at the top and and five buttons at the bottom. The buttons are as follows:
If you want to look at more than one image, you need to repeat steps (a) and (b) for each image.
The AMPTE/CCE/CHEM standard survey plots can be found at

C2GS runs in JDK© 1.1.8 or later Java Applet Viewers and Java-enabled Web Browsers.
