Casualties strike Guard, Reserves
WASHINGTON - In the first week of June, nine
of the 13 announced U.S. troop deaths in Iraq
were National Guard or Reserve soldiers, an
extraordinarily high toll on part-time troops.
The ninth was announced Tuesday: Sgt. Jamie A.
Gray, 29, of Montpelier, Vt., who died June 7 in
Scania, Iraq, when his military vehicle was
struck by one of the war's most frequent killers,
the blast from a homemade bomb.
The death brought the American toll in Iraq to
825. Of those, 607 died as a result of hostile
action and 218 of non-hostile causes.
The Pentagon also said the number of American
troops wounded in Iraq since the start of the war
has topped 5,000. The exact total is 5,013, up
131 from a week ago and 3,025 from two months
ago. -- ASSOCIATED PRESS

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia -- An American who worked
for a U.S. defense contractor was shot and killed
Tuesday in the Saudi capital, the second deadly
shooting of a Westerner in three days.An
assailant killed the man in his home, said a
spokesman for the man's employer, Vinnell Corp.,
based in Fairfax, Va. "He was found by
another employee at his apartment and taken to a
hospital, but did not survive," said the
spokesman, Jay McCaffrey.

British examining 75 claims in Iraq
LONDON -- The British government said Tuesday
that military police had investigated or were
continuing to probe 75 cases of alleged abuse,
civilian deaths and injuries in Iraq -- more than
twice the number previously disclosed.
Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram said he had
previously misinformed lawmakers in the House of
Commons on May 4 when he spoke of 33 cases, as
details of 28 other inquiries had not been
tallied. Since then, 14 more inquiries have been
launched.
The Ministry of Defense said of the 75 cases,
30 probes were in progress and 37 had been
completed and no further action was being taken.
Eight other investigations had been completed and
authorities were contemplating charges. --
