Subject: More on passing of Don
Calamar
A Quiet Hero's Passing
and The Rise of Community Empowerment It
has been a weekend of community, of
celebrating a man who stood for
the best of our hopes and efforts
and a gathering of people who know how
much we need to change our society.
Don Calamar was the
best example that I know of committment
to community empowerment. I think
that is why he was so committed to
Arlington West. He would have
enjoyed Saturday's community breaking of
bread and sharing of thoughts and
emotions. Don loved community and
food. Don was a war hero, having won the
Silver Star not by shooting people but by
saving people. He never told
us. We found out just weeks ago
because he wanted to join up with his
band of brothers at the dedication of the
WW2 Memorial. I knew him for almost
twenty years and found out just weeks
ago.
Don was also a peace
hero, having been arrested for his
activism, but although Bud Booth and
Sanderson Beck have been in the news in
the last year for the same activism that
got Don arrested, he never mentioned it.
He was a lot of different kinds of heros
to different people, that was evident
today....but a key part of his heroism,
true heroism, is that humility of taking
the action but not the credit. Of
submitting his ego toward the goal of
community empowerment.
We should not lose
sight of what Don saw in Arlington
West. He didn't care about the
media, he knew that the community was
what was important. The teacher who
taught me not to worry about getting it
right, just get it done and fix it later
(in photography), had his priorities
straight. He had the presence of
mind to feed his companion and lover
before he engaged in heavy discussion,
and he eschewed religious debate because
he knew that god was on our side (impish
smile).
As we look toward the
future of our AW community and our
society, I hope we can keep Don's
humility and good humor....his priorities
and love of community. Also when we
wonder why we are targeted as a threat by
some, remember that the antidote to the
domination by corporate greed and money
is empowered community, a movement that
can grow until nothing can stop it.
Winning an election will not stop it, nor
will impeaching a President. Real
democracy isn't bestowed upon us by a new
leader. It happens when we
surrender our ego for the common good and
work together to extend the community.
In solidarity, Lane

Veterans for Peace Members:
It is with deep regret
that I pass along this
message. Our good friend
and mentor, Edilith Eckhart, has died
quietly and will be missed.
Edilith was a long time member of
Veterans for Peace Chapter 56 of Humbold
Bay, the ACLU, WILPF, and numerous peace
and justice organizations over the
years. Edilith was a
World War II veteran, and traveled the
world in pursuit of justice and peace in
the world. She made many
trips to Russia, Israel and
Iraq. She was a former member
of the VFP Board of Directors, and served
as President of the Board for a
time. Edilith was a recepient of
the VFP Presidents' Medal.
Edilith was a Co-Founder of the VFP
Iraq Water Project, and as such, was
instrumental in sending several
delegations of VFP members to Iraq to
repair water treatment
facilities. We have lost a
treasure, here on the North Coast of
California, and she will be dearly missed
by all who knew and loved her. A
more fitting Obituary to follow when
details of her passing are known and
arrangements are made for the funeral and
services.
