Web 2 Applications & Social Networking

Information about the very interesting concept of Social Networking and community building is exploding on the Internet. The organization of personal blogs, community wikis, and dicussion groups has been enabled by what is being called Web 2. Applications.

I am doing research on how these expanding Web 2. opportunities can be used by people who are visiting the web sites Mountain Visions is producing.

Below is a link to a Matt Mackenzie's blog commenting that "Web 2.0 is about community building."

The age of Participation

A recent article by Andreas Kluth in the "Economist" notes that "The era of mass media is giving way to one of personal and participatory media... That will profoundly change both the media industry and society as a whole."

A second article in the "Economist" is titled "It's the links, stupid"
http://economist.com/surveys/displaystory.cfm?story_id=6794172

Describing a "BLOG" as a "personal online journal" in which other people may join and contribute as a group. A very interesting part of this article is the part contained under the headline "The Dunbar Number"

Project submission to PlaNetwork InterActive Conference

Title: InterActive InterNetworking for Ecological Commons

I have prepared the following proposal for discussion on the Internet and at the PlaNetwork InterActive Conference to be held in San Francisco, CA. June 5-6, 2004.
http://www.planetwork.net/interactive/proposal_display.html?id=16

Community based collaborative groups are often organized to study, rehabilitate and preserve watersheds, parks, and other natural ecological commons. Today, interactive and highly visualized multimedia web sites containing on-line community networking centers are also being developed in an attempt to attract and engage many more people in future democratic and cooperative commons management.

Response to James Neill -April 25, 2004

James,

Thank you for your prompt reply and I appreciate your interest. I looked at your PowerPoint presentation, "Where has the Adventure Gone" and find a lot of common interest in the concept of "Risk."

For the PlaNetwork conference in S.F, I am developing some more material on the Common Adventure, as it relates to a Community resource center and to an ecological common, such as a watershed or ecosystem. I will jot a few notes here while they are fresh in my mind.

Communication with James Neill - Wilderdom.com

I was visiting your web page and decided to take you up on the offer to add my name to your list.
http://www.wilderdom.com/people.html

My name is Gary O. Grimm and I was heavily involved in defining the "Common Adventure" concept in developing outdoor recreation, education and environmental cooperative outings at the University of Oregon, USA, in the late 1960s and 70s.

Common Adventure Bulletin Board started

I want to acknowledge the stimulating conversation I had this past weekend with "H"Hilbert. Our memories of the amazing outcomes which resulted from the Common Adventure Bulletin Boards at the University of Oregon and Idaho State University Outdoor Programs during the late 1960's and 1970s stimulated me to initiate a Common Adventure Bulletin Board. The web address is:

Early Common Adventure projects/ a few examples

Examples of Common Adventure projects during the late 1960's and 1970's will be listed as time allows.
The University of Oregon Outdoor Program, Room 23,- bulletin board provided a way that individuals could post any idea from a simple day hike, a mountain climbing expedition, and/or an environmental concern. This " outdoor idea bulletin board" and many of the example environmental projects were used by other groups in future years.

Common Adventure

From 1967 to 1980, I was involved in helping to coordinate an outdoor
environmental program at the University of Oregon. A feature of this
program was the existence of a common resource Room 23 in the
Student Union. This room was open 24/7 to anyone at the University,
and to people from the larger Eugene, Oregon community as well as to
travelers who were passing by. The main feature of this room was a
large Bulletin Board where visiting individuals could post their
interest (s) in outdoor trips and/or environmental projects.
Thousands of people used this communication opportunity and other
colleges and communities in North America soon copied the idea. Many
of these are still in existence today. This "Weblog" is my attempt to explain this concept and how it is used by communities of people using the Internet today.
