NOW ON TOUR.COM / GOGOL BORDELLO ORGANIZE BENEFIT CONCERTNew York's gypsy punk rock band Gogol Bordello will
organize a benefit concert in New York at Irving Plaza on June
9th...
...to benefit the Romani Jag Organization. Located
in the Carpathian Mountains in west Ukraine, Romani Jag is a small
organization that helps educate young gypsies and monitors anti-Roma police
brutality in Ukraine. The concert will attempt to raise awareness and open a
discussion about what is happening to Roma Gypsies in
Ukraine.
"Roma is in a vicious circle of poverty and prejudice and have been turned into public scapegoats for failures of government," says Gogol Bordello frontman Eugene Hutz. "By supporting Romani Jag, we want to help with cultural rehabilitation and more importantly on breaking stereotypes of gypsies." Fast establishing themselves as one of the most exciting live bands around, Gogol Bordello will return to the UK for their first major UK television appearance on BBC 2's Later With Jools Holland. Their performance will be broadcast on Friday, June 23rd. The band also has several UK headlining dates and festival appearances scheduled this summer including the O2 Wireless Festival in London's Hyde Park in June on the same stage with The Strokes, Belle And Sebastian and Super Furry Animals as well as Reading Festival and Leeds Festival in August. In the meantime, Gogol Bordello's "Start Wearing Purple" will be featured on the new compilation album from Russ Jones (Future World Funk) and Felix Buxton (Basement Jaxx), Gypsy Beats And Balkan Bangers, out on Atlantic Jaxx on the June 20th. The album is described by Jones as "new gypsy music with a Dancefloor twist," and the heat around this release is further indication of the foothold gypsy music is increasingly enjoying in contemporary culture.
