In his California Algebra 1 Success Initiative, Superintendent O’Connell is asking Governor Shwarzenegger to fully fund his mandate for Algebra 1 Testing in 8th grade in 3 years. If full funding is not provided, then the Governor should instruct the State Board to reconsider the Algebra 1 mandate at their September board meeting. Gretchen Muller from CMC and Sue Burr from CCESA were invited to speak at the end of O’Connell’s presentation. On the other hand, if people are not happy with the status quo, adopt a program that has limited problems that have been carefully chosen to teach the mathematics. ... With a traditional text, teachers can continue to choose the problems that they are used to using whether it is skill and practice, word problems, conceptual, or application problems.

...Social skills include Think, Pair, Share strategies and opportunities for students to work and study together and metacognition skills such as having students explain their reasoning and describe relationships.

...Five or six well chosen problems when implemented as the program intends can do much more for students learning math than having students do a multitude of problems that don't explicitly address the mathematics.

Mathematics Instructional Materials Discussion

Many CMC members have asked if CMC recommends specific programs for adoption. ...While many programs did meet all criteria in all categories, it is important for district teams to read the evaluation criteria in addition to using the mathematics adoption toolkit. ... Criterion 14 states “For a basic program a teacher’s edition that explains the role of the specific grade-level mathematics in the context of the overall mathematics curriculum for kindergarten through grade twelve.” Criterion 15 states “A teacher’s edition that contains full, adult-level explanations and examples of the more advanced mathematics concepts in the lessons so that teachers can improve their knowledge of the subject as necessary.”

...There is an abundance of programs, and I hope that districts do not feel overwhelmed by the task of examining so many programs and therefore readopt their current programs without using the resources available to help them through this adoption process.

Decisions, Decisions, Decisions

<dc:subject>CMC Blog</dc:subject>

Munger pointed out that especially with an abundance of programs there were many questions generated and communication with publishers beyond the times set up in public meetings was warranted, especially since other members of the public could communicate with them outside of scheduled public meeting times.

...It was quickly pointed out by CDE and others that this issue had already been dealt with by the Board back in July, and that the Board had ruled in favor of having a much more transparent adoption process. ... While on the surface it may indeed be true that having more access to publishers would aid Commissioners in making decisions and compiling their reports, it does seem curious that these Commissioners would want to return to some of the practices that so tarnished the previous adoption.

...Commissioner McCray who was the IMAP facilitator for the Carnegie panel stated that she had reservations about the panel’s recommendation of this program, so she asked Munger and Waggoner to review it.

...	Board member Lopez was concerned about not validating what the IMAP teachers had done and in the voting was the only member of the Board to vote in opposition of the CC recommendation that the Carnegie Algebra 1 program not be approved.
