Yvonne Jacquette

(Brooke Alexander, November 12-December 30, 1992)

Yvonne Jacquette's work is easily identifiable by now for its angel eye views. She has taken as her subject matter the exhilaration of fresh perspective. The view from her airplane window vantage point is of the sprawl of civilization with no romantic notion to clean up the scene. The glimpse is cold and impersonal. Instamatics have snapped the view countless times. But the artist's definitions of forms is more cartoon-like than photo-realist. First impulse is to grasp the recognizable. The reward soon follows as our gaze penetrates past the illusory facade. As we're zeroing in on a segment's activity, the play and warmth of her brushstrokes takes precedence. New this year are the jet wings jutting into the rendered surface. They add an incredible sensation of the recalled feeling of motion. Like on vacation, we're removed from our contexts. Her latest show of Paintings, Frescoes, Pastels opens at Brooke Alexander Gallery on November 12 and runs through December 30, 1992.
