WHEREAS, one half the people on the Africa Continent are living below the poverty line;

WHEREAS, 1.4 billion people live on less than $ 1 per day, 800 million people go to bed hungry every day, and 28,000 people die from poverty related causes everyday;

WHEREAS, the Millennium Goal #1 of the United Nations calls for eradicating extreme poverty and hunger;

WHEREAS, the Global Healing Initiative, headquartered in Utah is a partner for the Millennium Campaign;

WHEREAS, the Utah United Religions Initiative has invited Fr. Centurio Olaboro from Uganda to help promote White Band Day and call attention to the the issues of peace, poverty, the environment, and HIV-AIDS in Africa;

WHEREAS, prior to the upcoming G8 Summit, millions of people in events around the world will be mobilizing for the first global White Band Day, including concerts by musicians such as Bono and U2, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Madonna, Sting, and the Dave Matthews Band to demand that the recent forgiveness of debt in Africa is backed by policies that ensure trade justice;

WHEREAS, groups such as the Millennium Campaign, Global Healing, Bread For the World Institute, CARE USA, DATA, and the ONE Campaign are supporting these citizen efforts;.

WHEREAS, we support the U.N. Millennium Campaign goals to eradicate poverty, promote justice-oriented trade practices, and create sustainable environments; and,

WHEREAS, the City has a record of proven leadership on such international issues global warming.


NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ross C. Anderson, Mayor of Salt Lake City, do hereby proclaim July 1, and 2, 2005 as:

WHITE BAND DAY

and urge all citizens to wear a white band on these days, and learn about the Millennium Campaign, Global Healing Initiative, unsustainable environmental practices, and issues underlying the root causes of poverty.
