What Do I Mean By Change for Baristas?
I recently went to see Ann Richards
speak. You may remember her, she was the feisty and very wise Texas Governor
before Bush beat her by creating a smear "whisper" campaign insinuating she
might be a lesbian. Remember her?
Anyway, she mentioned that in the 2000 election, 22 million single women didn't
vote. Considering only about 100 million people voted, this means that this
contingent alone has the power of 1/5 of the entire amount of people who voted!
Richards said to get out these women to vote, to find them at their jobs, look them in the eye and tell them how important it is to vote. Being a person of an intense desire to help this election, but not a good "one on one" person, (hence the website) I thought of a similar way to go about this.
Here is a PDF you can print out of cards
that say how important it is for single women to vote, and list this website
address. Without having to "get in anyone's face," you can paper clip these
cards to dollar bills and leave them as tips anywhere you think the workers
are likely to be single women; baristas, waitresses, anywhere there is a tip
jar, there is probably a single woman. This way, they get a tip, and can see
that you are not a chintzy "change" tipper, and they can take or leave your
other "tip." If
enough people do this, in enough swing states, we may at least get a few new
single women voters out there and involved. It's worth a try!
