The Right to "Bear" Arms?
As I read the stories about the 18 men and women from the 343rd Quartermaster Company who refused their mission to deliver fuel on a dangerous route because they had serious questions about the armoring and safety of their equipment . . . for some reason I remembered an advertisement I had come across in early 2003, and had saved because it was so astonishing.
This advertisement appeared in the August 3, 2003 issue of "Parade" Magazine. I kept it because, to me, this is perhaps one of the most appalling things I have ever encountered. Issued by the Hamilton Collection, for the low, low price of $19.95, this for-profit sculpture was billed as "A Salute to America's Military Heroes". I think it's better if I just share their copy with you verbatim:
"They've been called up for service and they're ready to fight. Perpared to defend their beloved country, america's troops answer the call of freedom. Compelled by their sense of honor, and inspired by the unbreakable spirit of the american people, our military heroes stand on the front lines in the fight for liberty and justice.
To honor the brave dedication of the U.S. Armed Forces, The Hamilton collection proudly presents "Front Lines of Freedom," a tribute to all those who serve our nation. Filled with authentic details, this handcrafted figurine represents the fearless troops who have vowed to defend the United States, no matter where their mission takes them. Just one look at tis handsome bear's boundless courage and fierce commitment to his country, and your heart will fill with pride.
available exclusively from Hamilton, "Front Line of Freedom" is issued in a limited edition, hand-numbered Certificate of Authenticity. And, as always, our 365-Day Gauarantee assures your complete satisfaction. Show your support for America's military heroes. Reply today."
When we say that we are "supporting our troops," let's do it by demanding correct intelligence, appropriate equipment and gear, and a clear exit strategy. You are not a "patriot" when you spend your money on schlocky s**t like this.
