So I saw this truck coming up behind me the other day, and I noticed that he had one of those stupid "peeing Calvin" stickers on his back side window. The thought that went through my mind upon seeing this is "That guy has to be a Republican." It was the first time I had ever put the two together that directly, but I see now that it was always there. Sure enough, as he passed me he had his Bush/Cheney '04 sticker up in the back window. Suddenly I realized, we are not a country of red states and blue states . . . instead you can divide it into the types of people who would put a peeing Calvin sticker on their truck (I always get the distinct impression that these people have never actually ever READ a Calvin strip and somehow assume he is similar to Bart Simpson) and those who wouldn't. The Calvin peeing types usually also have one of "The Power of Pride" stickers somewhere nearby. In the same voting camp, but for different reasons are those with Jesus fish decals, who more often than not also have the "choose life" sticker. When this type of voter combines, you get the really confusing "Calvin Praying" stickers (these people, definately, have never seen a Calvin and Hobbes strip).
Representing
the other side of the spectrum, of course, is the "Practice Random Acts of
Kindness and Senseless Beauty", rainbow flag, and "Mean People
Suck" crowd.
And then, of course, there are those who like make clever statements making
fun
of the bumper stickers everyone else has, i.e. the Darwin Fish, "Visualize
Whirrled Peas," and "My Karma Ran over my Dogma." (The problem with clever
is it only stays so until everyone else has one. And that stickum is hard
to get off.)
After finding an elephant peeing on the word "liberals," I feel pretty vindicated that the peeing Calvin falls under "it's a Republican thing, you wouldn't understand." That's true, I really don't think I'll ever understand the peeing Calvin phenomenom.
I used to scoff at the "Mean People Suck" sticker too, but now I am having second thoughts, after looking at the goings on of this administration, it is getting more apt ever day.
