I've got Trolls!
From time to time, I get inflammatory comments on
this blog. It's strange, 'cause I'm not really saying anything to get
attention. Still this is
my
corner of the web. I am the tyrannical dictator who censors with a quickness.
This is not a free-speech zone. If you've got something to say that I don't
like, you'll have to say it somewhere
else.
And to use the entry about my cat
dying as a forum...W.T.F?.... Let's just say you're not going to get your
message across.

Funny photo sequence
I saw this on the wall once at a party, and I
thought it was pretty funny. It's called "Fat Cat
Capsizing".

This is ridiculous
TurboTax online actually got worse this year.
The program is very buggy, and when I accidentally clicked "yes" where I should
have said "no", I got a phantom charge of $1000 that I can't make go away by
going back to the same form and clicking "no". TurboTax did not make my life
easier this year: I could have gotten it all finished sooner doing it by myself.
This is B.S.

Iolani HS basketball dynasty
I just got the tape from Dad: Iolani won their
5th straight state HS basketball title this year, by destroying Kaimuki.
Unbelievable. Average margin of victory in the tournament: 19.2. Iolani is
now tied with Punahou overall number of titles at 8.

Seamless
It finally came time for me to take my old iBook out
back with a shotgun and put it down. Before I did that, I got a new one at the
Apple store in San Francisco and transferred over all my data by firewire. I was
super impressed by how seamlessly the automatic Mac-to-Mac transfer worked:
after the 1 hour transfer of info (during which I had to balance my old computer
on its head to keep it from crashing), this computer works just like my old
one-- except much faster with cool new features and a bigger
screen.
I've also noticed that the casing is a little more
sturdy. By all accounts, the design flaw that troubled G3 iBooks (and affected
me on three occasions, twice under warranty and then this final one) has been
fixed in this model. Nonetheless, I'm going to be a little more careful with
this one: I bought a neoprene casing for travel, and I will always replace the
little rubber feet if they come off.

Explainer for the furriners
A groundhog, a.k.a. "woodchuck*" is a large
marmot with short legs.Groundhog day is
based on the fun notion that watching a groundhog can tell us how much longer
winter will last. If a groundhog comes out of his hole on groundhog day and
does not see his shadow, then the prediction is that winter will soon come to an
end. If instead he sees his shadow and is startled back into his hole, winter
will continue for 6 more weeks. Before he died, my Grandfather would call my
mom every year on the morning of her birthday: "well Grundoon, what's the
weather report?"I kid you not, if you ask my
mom what her sign is, she will say "groundhog". She likes to be
distinguished.
This
year, two of the more famous groundhogs, Punxatawny Phil and General Beauregard
Lee, disagreed on the status of winter. My mom is with Beuregard: she did not
see her shadow today.Happy birthday
mom!

When commercials are more entertaining than TV
I turned on the Dallas vs. Washington football
game while mending my jacket and cooking my dinner. It's a rout and completely
uninteresting. In fact its depressing because we've known the outcome since
halftime but key players keep getting injured and carted off the
field. The bright side of this TV watching
experience was in fact a MasterCard commercial featuring Peyton Manning acting
as a superfan for everyday people.
This will be one of my favorite commercials
ever. Peyton does a great job with self-deprecating humor (my favorite
kind).I have become a Colts fan this year
because it's so difficult to be a Lions fan lately, and there
are so many people on Peyton's team who, like him, are just classy and likable.
Too bad they couldn't be perfect this year.

Imua!
("Forward!")
Congrats
to the UH Wahine Rainbows who beat the Longhorns to enter the sweet 16 of
women's college volleyball. I was at the game, although I don't think I ever
had any cameras on me. The one Hawaii fan who led the cheers ("1...2...3...
POINT: HAWAI'I! PROOF!" for every score) got most of the attention.

Great analysis
I just switched on abc to check the UT colorado
score. 70-3. In the third quarter. One of the announcers was talking about the
game between UCLA and USC later tonight, and he said that because it's a
rivalry: "there's a good chance that it'll be
closer."
(emphasis mine)
Closer than 70-3.
Ya think??
