Presentation

Dear visitor! My name is Peter Gillgren and I'm a Swedish professor of Art History at Stockholm University. In 1995 I received my PhD from Uppsala University on a dissertation about painted epitaphs in Early Modern Sweden. Between 1998 and 2007 I've been working at Gotland University in Visby (Högskolan på Gotland). More recently I have published articles on Renaissance and Baroque art, as well as on the theories of Art History. Right now I'm finishing at book called Federico Barocci and the Spectator. It is mostly about the art of the Urbino painter Federico Barocci (1535-1612) but also more generally about aesthetic communication in the 16th century.

Beside the Early Modern period I have an interest in contemporary art, music and multi-media.

My home is in the old town of Visby, where I live together with Maria and our daughter Anina in a late 15th century building

On the site you will find some full text articles and some course materials for my students. You will also find a Renaissance weblog I'm running. Sometimes I publish photographs I've taken, mostly for private reasons.
