Drawing on my experience as an ensemble director, these charts are easy to rehearse, fun to perform, and flexible enough to help you get the best from your students. All big band charts feature thorough rhythm section parts, extensive articulations, and the most common scale choices for the solo section indicated in all parts.

Jazz Ensemble Music:

Simple Improv Series:
These charts feature solo sections that utilize the playalong tracks in the book "Simple Improv". The charts can be used independently from the book.

T’s Idea.
A very simple tune for young middle school/junior high jazz bands. Easy ranges and minimal syncopation make this a doable chart for young students.

Gentle Summer Breeze.
An easy, delightful bossa nova with Alto 1 and Trumpet 2 on melody. An open solo vamp with a variety of backgrounds makes it possible to feature anyone (or everyone) on a solo.

H.S.T.
The title is short for Happy Swing Tune and aptly describes this light, melodic tune. Easy solo sections can be repeated for as many soloists as you want.

Hip-hop feel with funky rhythms make this one a very popular choice among students. Anyone can solo using a Minor Pentatonic or Minor Blues Scale.

Jammin' On The Blues.
A very flexible Bb blues that provides students many opportunities for solos. Climaxes with a shout section that leads up to a high concert Bb for trumpet 1 with an optional cut that makes this chart do-able for younger bands with limited trumpet ranges.

Swingin' Hard (or Hardly Swingin'?).
A infectious shuffle blues that features a sax soli as well as Alto Sax, Trumpet, and Piano solos on basic blues changes.

Saxophone Quartet Music:

A Simple Samba.
SATB or AATB. As the name implies, it is a simple catchy samba. Parts are easy but this piece needs 4 players with a good sense of rhythm to pull it off. The written solo section may be opened up for additional improvised solos.
