My first teaching experience occurred in high school when I was asked to give bassoon lessons to several beginners. This was an invaluable experience because it helped me become more observant of my own teacher's methods and start to develop my teaching philosophy, which includes these ideas:

  • A teacher's job is to observe and direct.
  • Look at the big picture-don't sweat the small stuff.
  • Make it seem natural.
  • Persistence pays off.
  • When in doubt-figure it out.
