Career advice for instrumentalists.

Pursuing a career in music can be an important decision in your life. If you're considering such a career choice, I hope you'll take the time to read through this section. These pages present some thoughts on the qualities needed to be a successful music major or musician, based on my experiences during the 30 years I have been actively involved in music performance/teaching.

I am a saxophonist/clarinetist whose interests are mainstream jazz and commercial music. I have performed classical recitals, played in orchestras, big bands, classic rock bands, and even a few polka bands. I've recorded commercial jingles, been on national TV, and played with many celebrities. As a teacher, I've taught primarily at the high school/college level, and worked with all age groups from beginners to adults. My goal in life is to make people happy with my music, help others to learn to perform, and support myself while doing it.

This advice is colored by all my experiences, and what I've seen work for other people. My remarks are intended for musicians who work alone or in groups, and apply to all styles of music.
