The links below are to a 30,621-name index for obituaries “obits” and death
notices from the Kirksville Daily Express, Kirksville, Missouri from March 1979
(Vol. #1) through December 31, 2007 (Vol. #26) that are included in hard
copy as part of the collection of the Adair County Historical Society (ACHS). A
description of the collection and instructions for obtaining hard copies follow
(or just go to the index: A-C D-H I-M N-R S-Z). This is
intended to provide a valuable service to genealogists as well serve as a fund
raiser for the ACHS, a non-profit organization.
For a few years in the 1980s, the collection (and thus its index) contains only
obits and notices for those buried in Adair County, Missouri even though a full
obit or death notice appeared in the paper. For other years the collection
contains obituaries but not death notices. Many of the books contain all obits
and death notices that appeared in the paper, including persons who had resided
in surrounding counties and/or had former ties to Adair County. The index
includes the given name and surname for deceased persons including all the
prior surnames for the women. The volumes are by year and the obits are in
approximate chronological order by death date. However, when we obtain a
missing obituary, it is added to a later volume. The index is in alphabetical
order by surname which also shows the given name and the volume and page
numbers (i.e. 17-104 is volume 17, page 104).
The ACHS will send up to three obituaries/death notices from this index for a
$10.00 minimum charge plus $3.00 each thereafter. Send your request and the
check made payable to the Adair County Historical Society at the above address.
The request must include a self-addressed stamped envelope (legal sized) and
should specify the volume and page number on which the requested obituary/death
notice appears in the index.
Researchers may also view the collection and index at the Society’s museum and
library at the above address and make copies for twenty-five cents each.
Regular visiting hours are 1 - 4 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.
