Charla

Charla is an open source Mac OS X application for accessing Yahoo! chat (that's chat, not Messenger). It is released under this BSD-style license.

Charla 1.6.3, released on 9/4/02, is here. This release has a number of bugfixes:

• The name list properly updates when someone leaves the room under Jaguar.
• A memory leak was found and fixed.
• An exploit involving an out of range font size has been plugged.
• I used the emote hack I discussed earlier. Emotes are now ordinary comments, colored magenta.

• An option for the Metal appearance under Jaguar. Don't try it under OS X 10.1 or below.
• Animated smileys. Most of the smileys at http://www.sector101.fsnet.co.uk/yahoo/ are supported. Thanks to mysticalosx for converting the animated GIFs into the TIFF files.

Charla 2 remains on the CVS server, but it's badly outdated and won't even log in. Go here if you want it.

Features:

• As Mac OS X native as it gets. Charla is written in Cocoa/Objective-C, multithreaded, and uses the underlying BSD socket layer for communication with the Yahoo! servers.
• Full support for sending and receiving color fades, bold, underline, italics, links, fonts, and smileys ().
• Powerful spam filters. When I use Charla, I simply don't get spammed, either in the main chat window or via PMs.
• Lamer filters. Charla can automagically ignore or simply not display chatters who flood (type real fast to fill up the screen) or repeat. Charla can also turn ALL CAPS into sentences with proper capitalization. There's even a full regular expression engine that you can use to block messages.
• Full support for Personal Messages, either within the main chat window or in separate windows, as well as a Personal Message history.
• Support for status messages.

JPEGDeux

JPEGDeux 1.7b was released on 11/27/02. It has some cool new features.

• Stores image file references as aliases instead of paths, so that slideshows don't break when you move images.
• Supports displaying sequences of images found on the web.
• Supports a few transitions (crossfade and scroll in from various sides, with adjustable speeds) in full screen mode.
• Support for displaying comments found in JPEG files.

JPEGDeux is a program that displays slideshows of image files. The shows can be displayed in a window, full screen, or in the Dock (!), and there are several customization options.

The name comes from the program JPEGView, which I admire as a specialized tool that works intuitively and is done right (it still runs great in the Classic environment despite being written in 1995). JPEGDeux is open-sourced under the BSD license. The code demonstrates some interesting Cocoa techniques, such as short-circuiting the main run loop and a customized image view.

Angband

Angband is an open source, addictive role playing game. It has a very long history (it is a direct descendant of Moria, a program originally designed for the VMS in 1985).

I am responsible for the Carbon port of Angband, which runs native on both Mac OS 8.1 through 9.1 and Mac OS X.

Here's the Angband home page. There is also a Usenet newsgroup devoted to Angband: rec.games.roguelike.angband. The Angband open-source situation is somewhat confusing: this page explains it.

Note: There is a version of Carbon Angband on the standard FTP server that contains a bug that makes Angband consume much more processor time than it needs. This version fixes that bug.
