UP TO 5,000 fans of the didgeridoo could attend a new fringe festival, being held at the historic Calbourne Mill tourist attraction.
Freshwater fan of the Aboriginal instrument, Gerry Priddle, is promoting the unique festival at the water mill between August 7 and 9.
The Isle of Wight DidgHeadRadio Festival takes its name from the web-streamed radio station he established as a result of his long fascination with the ‘didg’. His station, run from his Hooke Hill home, specialises in broadcasting music featuring the didgeridoo and has a worldwide audience of 10,000.
The didgeridoo is one of the world’s most ancient instruments but has a contemporary worldwide following too.
Mr Priddle, 61, who has previously been involved with didgeridoo gatherings on the mainland, including promotion of a festival, has organised the August event for those who like to play and listen to the instrument.
There will be performances from artists from Britain and Europe, workshops and a teepee village at the festival, which costs £45 for an adult weekend camping ticket and £100 for a family.
There are also day visitor tickets and special deals have been negotiated through Red Funnel.
Mr Priddle said: “Not only will there be music played on one of the world’s most ancient instruments but many other instruments besides.
“There’s more information at
www.dhrfestival.co.uk and all the artists playing can be heard at the radio website www.DidgHeadRadio.co.uk
“The festival has been warmly welcomed on the Island as something very different from other Island events.”
