Diving into the fascinating World of Overtones
Two people singing the same note still sound different. Why? Even with the same basic note sung each voice is in fact a very individual mix, a fundamental note and accordingly an array of several overtones, which we distinguish as timbre.
By changing the shape of the resonant cavities of the mouth the singer selectively amplifies overtones and fundamental. This resonant tuning allows the singer to create apparently more than one pitch at the same time (the fundamental and a selected overtone), while in effect still generating a single fundamental frequency with his/her vocal folds
The people of Tuva (a small country north of Mongolia) have a wide range of singing vocalization.
With playful experiments of the voice the three basic styles: khoomei, kargyraa and sygyt, are opening up the horizon and the perception of the world of overtones.
