PROGRAMS

Viewsic Expressions is a dance organization based in New York dedicated to the development of local and international contemporary dancers. Our primary activities include creating opportunities for advanced training and development of dance artist work. Viewsic Expression offers community based activities including master classes, workshops, conversations, school residencies, and performances. We promote the values of artistic expression, physical awareness, and cultural diversity through dance. Viewsic Expressions serves school children, pre-professional dancers and adult audiences in New York and surrounding areas.

*Conversation With the Legends

The Conversation with the legends is a round-table discussion designed to increase the awareness and importance of our living legends. This is a bi-annul discussion hosted by Geneses II Museum in Harlem, New York. This program helps young artist to developing mentorship with the esteemed speaker.

*Black Bones

Black Bone is a powerful and emotional dance performance celebrating the contribution of the African/African-American male choreographers in the dance world. This multi-faceted program shows the bridge and evolution linking the past to today and to the future. Black Bones was created because there exists a gap between our generations in the Black dance community caused by the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic. “Our technique, and our dances are being lost to all.”

*Dance 4U Project

Since 2005, Viewsic Expressions has presented the Dance 4U Project, bringing high quality, advanced-level educators to provide in-depth performances nationally and internationally. Past Dance 4U Project artist-educators and performers have worked with the some of the greatest companies and choreographers including: Bill T. Jones, Eleo Pomare, Urban Bush Women, Philadelphia Dance Company-Phliadanco, Cleo Parker Dance Company, Christal Brown, Andrea Woods/Souloworks, Liz Lerman and others.

Viewsic Expressions choreography workshop has started. The workshop will culminate in an informal public performance during the fall and Summer Festivals. Appropriate works produced during the workshop may be invited to perform on performances in Festival in New York or on Tour.

*Master Classes

Master classes are designed for college-aged students, professional dancers, and advanced level high school dancers. It is intended to challenge the dancer's approach to movement while deepening their existing skills. Mr. Barnes curriculum is specifically designed to take dancers beyond the realm of the technical and support breakthroughs in their abilities as performers and artists.

This year's curriculum will include the following five areas of concentration:

Intermediate & Advanced Dance Technique - Students will be exposed to a tremendous range of challenging movement as each of our guest artists teach in-depth technique classes rooted in their own unique methodologies and styles (see artist biographies for more detailed class descriptions).

Partnering & Contact Improvisation- Because the goal of Viewsic Expressions is to expand the dancer's repertoire of tools, resources, and knowledge, we will present not one but multiple approaches to partnering. Students will have the opportunity to learn a duet that instructs and applies basic skills required for partnered dancing. They will also be instructed in "Partnering Composition," and invited to ultimately use these techniques to move beyond the duet form and apply principles to larger group compositions.

Composition -Our focus on composition will allow students to work with professional choreographers in the advancement of their choreographic and compositional skills. Students are invited to bring works of choreography in various stages of development to be refined in workshops with our guest instructors. A select group of young choreographers emerging from this track will be invited to show their work in the studio showcase and/or in future Dance 4U Project dance performances.

Body Awareness, Conditioning and Injury Prevention - This year we are expanding the morning yoga/pilates warm-up to allow for in-depth training in injury prevention and dance conditioning techniques. Students will learn by doing. Methods will include yoga, Pilates, Alexander Technique, physical therapy, Gyrotonics, abdominal conditioning, massage, relaxation techniques, guided and visual imagery and more.

Special Topics - This area of concentration is designed to address the dancer as an artist and human being, not just a technician. Students will explore improvisation as a means to expanding the dancer's stage presence and awareness. It will also offer classes on the art of auditioning, working with music, improvisation as dance making and more.
