Check out my new online portfolio

Finally sold a photograph! This has inspired me to put together a more extensive online portfolio, as well as to work on new images. Here are a few.

Feminist Historiography, Journalism History, and the Problem of Human Agency

I have posted pdf files of my dissertation, "Feminist Historiography, Journalism History, and the Problem of Human Agency," on my .Mac website. I completed this in 1994. Although it is somewhat outdated, particularly in its discussion of various theoretical versions of feminism, as well as its discussion of the state of journalism historiography, much of it is still relevant.

Abstract below.

The Activist and the Artist: A Lifelong Conflict (Re-Post)

I posted this originally March 26, 2004. I am still facing the same conflict. But the activism has long since taken a very different turn. I am no longer involved in IndyMedia. My activism has mostly centered around public safety issues, though I do keep a hand in media issues (still working on Democracy Now! in Rochester -- now trying to keep it afloat on the air at WROC).

And now, I am ready to write "the big book." Or actually the big two. And my photography -- well, I haven't written about my photo show, have I. Oh my, I do have so much to catch up with here!

I am pulled in so many different directions, but the most important conflict I have right now is between being an activist and being an "artist" (that is, someone who produces creative work).

Haven't written here in a long time. Lots of distractions. Find myself now needing to come back to the core, which is my creative work.

Reporting Homicide and other crimes: Rochester D&C story today

Posted this in response to a story in the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle today. Rochester's homicide rate is up for the year. But other crime rates are down. Traditional news values here do disservice to our community by combining what are essentially two stories into one.

Work, Grace, and the potential for release through forgiveness

I wrote this in response to a post by a friend of mine who is involved in the community forums on violence steering committee with me. I had posted to the group my entry for last Sunday's vocal ministry, and she asked me for the Quaker take on forgiveness. This was my reply.

We are not forsaken

I know. It's been a long time since I've written here. Life has been pretty intense, and a lot of the things that have happened I can't write publicly about. Anyway, I wrote this to day in an e-mail to friends. It's about a vocal ministry that came to me today in Quaker Meeting.

White Privilege and the Complications of Class

Recently I attended a workshop on race put on by the Rochester chapter of the National Coalition Building Institute. A wonderful conversation resulted, and those in attendance expressed the desire to meet again, as we felt the two hours we spent together was just an "appetizer," leaving us wanting more. Our discussions prompted me to go back through old writing of mine, much of which is on the web in various locations. Today I am calling attention to a WMST-L listserv discussion, (September 2001) and one of my posts, in response to an article by Peggy McIntosh, called "White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack." I am posting a slightly revised version of that here.

How to survive winter in Rochester

Ok, I know. Except for the last few days and a few days in October, we haven't had much of a winter. I wrote this a couple of years ago for a friend who had arrived here from Florida. This is what you need to survive...and even enjoy...a Rochester winter. Well, when we have one again.

Generations Lost: And something to do about it

Posted this in response to a story by Greg Livadas in today's Democrat and Chronicle regarding Rochester's 2006 homicides and the victims' families' experience. The paper is doing an excellent series on violence in the city, starting with Sunday's detailed assessment by Patrick Flanigan of the statistics for the year.

Symptoms of Inner Peace // Joy to the World

Procrastinating today by googling myself and came across some new results from stuff I posted to a fibromyalgia listserv back in the pre-google, pre-graphic interface version of the net, the contents of which Google has apparently bought (along with other old listservs).

Among the postings that came up was this 1994 post of mine. I decided it was worth sharing anew. I don’t know the original author as it was passed on to me by someone else. I posted it as an antidote to postings about the symptoms of depression, which were all too familiar to that group. I think I want to make a poster out of this!

Suburban pot-smoking friends "just don't get it"

I wrote this in February and just decided to publish it now as these issues have been very much on my mind as I work on the Community Forums on Violence. Seems to me to be particularly at this point, while we are dealing with the stabbings and shootings and beatings and murders in our neighborhood related to the drug trade. We cannot reduce violence in this city without dramatically changing the drug economy that controls the streets in so many of our inner city neighboorhds.

For fun & entertainment (and possible inspiration), I am posting some lyrics I wrote, adapting “This Little Light of Mine” as a “theme song” I would sing to myself to give me courage back when I was facing down the dealers on Union St. Songs have always been central to any movement, so I offer this as one for ours.

Pastors to Patrol with Police

Today's Rochester Democrat and Chronicle says Police Chief David Moore is planning to pair clergy with officers on the street, particularly in hard hit areas like mine in the Chili/Thurston neighborhood, home to two gangs, the "Mafia Associates" and the Thurston Zoo.
