Hot night on Chili

The peaceful spell is broken. Shot fired at the Last Stop Grocery around 10:30 last night, saw man running, reported it...

Earlier tonight I got stopped myself driving up Thurston. Now THAT's a funny story.

Well, the peace on Chili has finally been broken. Everything has been so quiet during the anti-violence initiative. Though Wednesday I noticed the usual suspects back trying to do the usual business, now that the pressure has let up. Thursday there was a girl fight with a whole long of youth gathered to watch and egg them on. And last night....

Last night I heard a gunshot, then looked out the window to see a man running down Hobart with what looked like a gun in his hand. Called it in. Ultimately an army of squad cars showed up.

I gather it was a robbery but no one hurt since there was no ambulance.

The man I saw running down Hobart street I later recognized as very likely the owner of the store. He came back up Hobart and crossed over to the store (Last Stop Grocery) with a tall, skinny guy with what looked like an inside-out orange coat. Ultimately the guy they put into the prisoner transport van was the same. Looks like the owner chased him down and brought him back.

There hasn't been anything in the news about it, so I don't have any more details than that.

Earlier last night I got stopped on Thurston myself. It’s kind of a funny story.

Coming back from a walk at dusk in Genesee Valley Park, I stopped at the Rite Aid to pick up a few things. It's dark, rainy, when I come out. I'm heading up Thurston, thinking about dinner. All of a sudden a siren. A cop. I pull over to let him through. Uh oh, the car pulls in behind me, the floodlight filling my car.

Heart thudding. What did I do? Wait, wait, wait. Look for license. Where's my registration? Fumble, fumble. More heart thuds. Oh crap, what's this ticket going to cost me? Oh, double crap, I still haven’t filed my change of address. Can they fine me for that? Roll down the window. Wait, wait, wait. Thud, thud, thud.

Finally the officer comes up. I turn and say, in a panicky voice, “What did I do?”

He says, "Georgia!"

It's Brett Scheuer, CPO out of the Norton Street NET office, with whom I worked on the issues on Union Street. He just happened to be assigned over here that night.

Now, if ever there was a reason to join PAC-TAC, this is one. Ok, my violation was just forgetting to put my lights on. But still.

We had a good laugh and a brief chat. He just happened to be assigned over here tonight. I think I also saw him down at the corner, among the first responders.

Definitely hot night on Chili.
