900 miles, 900 miles, 900 miles, 900 miles

An ambitious goal not quite met. But still, I am proud! 900 instead of 1,000 miles is still a long way to ride!

Internet research and adamant insistence on reasonable application of Americans with Disabilities Act pays off! Maryland cannot deny me my unemployment benefits after all. Feeling powerful, slaying dragons one by one...

25 states have unemployment insurance laws that discriminate against people with disabilities

Twenty-five states deny part-time workers unemployment benefits, including Maryland -- one of the wealthiest states in the United States. Among other problems this causes, the policy discriminates against people with disabilities who cannot work more than part-time.

Hey, Hey, What Did I Say? A Nightmare. Truly, truly a Nightmare.

I knew this would happen. I SAID this would happen. Thousands of people -- particularly low income -- unable to get essential prescriptions because of the nightmare known as Medicare Plan D.

Dual eligibles (people with both Medicaid and Medicare) like me were forced into this program. Before, we didn't have to worry about prescriptions. Now, it's one gigantic mess. People are being turned away. States are having to step in and pay to ensure that people don't suffer. Read the latest news stories, collected from Google News, here.

CO-PAYS FOR MEDICAID/MEDICARE DUAL ELIGIBLES INCREASE OVERNIGHT

Went to get a couple of prescriptions refilled yesterday under Unicare, the Medicare Plan D prescription plan that was assigned to me. Lo and behold, it turns out the information I based my decision on has changed overnight.

AARP's nonsense scripted response to my e-mail complaint

I love this. AARP responded to my e-mail complaining about the Medicare Prescription Drug NIGHTMARE, which AARP helped pass. As you can see, this response does not address any of the issues I raised in my e-mail and simply provides information about the program -- information available elsewhere on the web. In fact, this e-mail assumes I am a member, when I stated that I am not nor ever would become a member. If this is the way they answer consumer complaints -- without paying attention to a single word the consumer has written -- well, then, all the more reason not to become a member!

Medicare Prescription Drug Act -- Nightmare for Millions

I posted the following message in an e-mail to AARP after a long insomniac night...I'm trying to deal with the fact that I have to choose from a dizzying array of prescription plans when before all I had to do was re-certify for Medicaid each year. Until now, I have never had to worry whether my prescriptions would get covered or how much I had to pay for them. Because the Medicare Prescription Coverage act would not have been passed without the support of the AARP, I am posting this specifically in criticism of that organization. Of course, there are many people who are responsible for this nightmare. I will deal with them later.

Crazy Lady Rides Again -- Below Freezing, Windchill @ 20

I was stressed out today for a number of reasons and so decided to do a ride a little after 6 p.m. Local tv website says it's 31 degrees, but just 20 with the wind chill. Coldest day I have ever ridden. I managed a good ride anyway. Warm & toasty upper body. Slightly chilled lower. More on how that's possible.

Fitting Exercise into a 40-hour Work Week

A friend of mine wrote, regarding the benefits of my bike riding schedule: "Great -- glad to hear its working out for you. Maybe there is hope for me, but I don't see how I'm going to fit anything like that in a 40-hour work week."

A few of my thoughts on in response ...

George W. Bush's War on the Vulnerable

President George W. Bush is doing his best to eviscerate programs that help the disabled to achieve lives resembling normalcy. This is part of the overall strategy of the neo-conservatives to dismantle the progress toward social justice begun with Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, Lyndon Baines Johnson's "War on Poverty" and the Americans With Disabilities Act that was signed into law by "W's" own father, George H.W. Bush. Below is a summary of what the current Bush Administration is attempting to do in its war on the vulnerable, courtesy of the ADA Watch and the National Coalition for Disability Rights. Nearly all of these efforts will affect me personally.

The "sick care system": another doctor fails me...

This is a letter I wrote to a neurologist who gave me all too short shrift a few weeks ago. I am not including the name. I will wait to see what kind of response I get, if any. I do not know if my suspicions about why so little time was given to me are correct: that I am a Medicare/Medicaid patient and therefore the reimbursement levels are too low to justify anything more than just enough consideration to provide defense against malpractice. I could be very wrong on that. But I am finding (with a few, very wonderful exceptions) that since I lost my HMO coverage I am being treated differently from before. But as I say here: Quality health care should not be a commodity available only to the highest bidder.

One more case of how our so-called health care system makes people sick

Ok, I know it is nearly 3 a.m. and I should be in bed. But I am wide awake because I am upset about something that happened today -- another instance of how the so-called health care system contributes to making people sick.
