unemployment benefits, including Maryland -- one of the wealthiest states in the
United States. Among other problems this causes, the policy discriminates
against people with disabilities who cannot work more than part-time.

knew
this would happen. I SAID
this would happen. Thousands of
people -- particularly low income -- unable to get essential prescriptions
because of the nightmare known as Medicare Plan D.
Dual eligibles (people with both Medicaid and Medicare) like me were forced into this program. Before, we didn't have to worry about prescriptions. Now, it's one gigantic mess. People are being turned away. States are having to step in and pay to ensure that people don't suffer. Read the latest news stories, collected from Google News, here. on has changed overnight.

Posted at 12:41 PM Read More Tue - November 22, 2005AARP's nonsense scripted response to my e-mail complaintI love this. AARP responded to my e-mail complaining about the Medicare
Prescription Drug NIGHTMARE, which AARP helped pass. As you can see, this
response does not address any of the issues I raised in my e-mail and simply
provides information about the program -- information available elsewhere on the
web. In fact, this e-mail assumes I am a member, when I stated that I am not nor
ever would become a member. If this is the way they answer consumer complaints
-- without paying attention to a single word the consumer has written -- well,
then, all the more reason not to become a member!
Posted at 11:06 AM Read More Fri - November 18, 2005Medicare Prescription Drug Act -- Nightmare for MillionsI posted the following message in an
e-mail to AARP
after a long insomniac night...I'm trying to deal with the fact that I have to
choose from a dizzying array of prescription plans when before all I had to do
was re-certify for Medicaid each year. Until now, I have never had to worry
whether my prescriptions would get covered or how much I had to pay for them.
Because the Medicare Prescription Coverage act would not have been passed
without the support of the AARP, I am posting this specifically in criticism of
that organization. Of course, there are many people who are responsible for this
nightmare. I will deal with
them
later.

Posted at 01:52 PM Read More Thu - April 28, 2005George W. Bush's War on the VulnerablePresident George W. Bush is doing his
best to eviscerate programs that help the disabled to achieve lives resembling
normalcy. This is part of the overall strategy of the neo-conservatives to
dismantle the progress toward social justice begun with Franklin D. Roosevelt's
New Deal, Lyndon Baines Johnson's "War on Poverty" and the Americans With
Disabilities Act that was signed into law by "W's" own father, George H.W. Bush.
Below is a summary of what the current Bush Administration is attempting to do
in its war on the vulnerable, courtesy of the ADA Watch and the National
Coalition for Disability Rights. Nearly all of these efforts will affect me
personally.
Posted at 11:28 PM Read More Sat - April 16, 2005The "sick care system": another doctor fails me...This is a letter I wrote to a neurologist
who gave me all too short shrift a few weeks ago. I am not including the name. I
will wait to see what kind of response I get, if any. I do not know if my
suspicions about why so little time was given to me are correct: that I am a
Medicare/Medicaid patient and therefore the reimbursement levels are too low to
justify anything more than just enough consideration to provide defense against
malpractice. I could be very wrong on that. But I am finding (with a few, very
wonderful exceptions) that since I lost my HMO coverage I am being treated
differently from before. But as I say here: Quality health care should not be a
commodity available only to the highest bidder.

contributes to making people sick.

About The Author
My name is Georgia NeSmith. "Random Acts of Love" is my weblog, but I have numerous other websites you can link to through this blog. "Random Acts of Love" began in February, 2004, and I have been posting to it fairly steadily ever since, although there are a few months when illness and other issues have kept me away. I write about nearly everything under the sun. I also do a lot of photography and digital art and I teach journalism online. Recently I've also started posting videos to YouTube. When I am not doing that, I am trouble-shooting Mac computer issues. Oh, yeah. I also do a lot of community activism. (Can anyone say ADD? I call it AEG -- "attention excess gift.") I hope you enjoy reading what you find here, and that you will respond to the things you like (and argue with me over things you don't!). You can e-mail me directly from the "Feedback" link that is included with every post. This weblog is provided free of charge. However, if you like what you read here and want to ensure that it stays online, you can make a donation through PayPal below.
