Wet, Bedraggled, But Happy

Caught out in a storm.

It was 72 degrees when I started out today, a little before one p.m. Weather forecast was for things to get stormy, so I went riding earlier than usual. It had already sprinkled a little bit. So I stashed my poncho in my backpack just in case, and brought all my lighting gear because when it rains, it can get so dark. I pushed myself to go faster so I could get the ride in before the storm broke.

It was a bit windy. But I like that. Gives me more resistance, therefore better workout, therefore better pain relief.

It's like a told a friend earlier during hospitality at the Quaker Meeting. Imagine a drug that gives you the best pain relief imaginable. Not only do you feel no pain, you feel wonderful. And it goes on for hours. Better than morphine, and the only side effects you get from it are healthy: better heart condition, stronger muscles, leaner body, exhilarating mood. (Yes, there's an addiction to this high. A good addiction to have!)

Did my usual route, including Cobbs Hill. Had to miss that hill yesterday because I didn't go riding until after dark, and the reservoir closes at 6 p.m. That's another story -- a lovely evening, and I've found that the traffic is a lot lighter than during daylight. Of course, you don't get many nights in November in Rochester when it's 66 degrees.

On my way back I decided to stop at Starry Nites cafe. But I was out of luck there. Nothing to eat, given the gluten-free, vegan diet I'm now on for health reasons. (Gluten-free because of allergy, vegan recommended by my doc for reducing inflammation.) Both of their vegetarian soups had milk in them. So I hopped back on the bike and headed for Spot Coffee. Same thing there. Ended up making do with a veggie and hummus wrap without the wrap. Actually it was quite good! They gave me extra hummus and veggies.

Anyway, while I was there the sky opened up. Pouring rain. Dark, dark sky. Thunder, lightning. Hoo, boy, was I glad for that poncho. Just made it home and in spite of the poncho I'm a bit soaked. Fortunately it was only five blocks.

Ok, so I am becoming a bit of a nut case with this bike riding business. You would, too, if you could feel that high without drugs!
