And now...the lilacs

It's true. The lilacs are beginning to bloom. That means they will be out in full force by May 14, the first day of Rochester's 10-day long Lilac Festival, which marks the beginning of Rochester's wonderful festival season.

Lilac Festival season is often a bit chancy. Depending on how cold (or warm) early spring has been, the lilacs may not bloom until the very end, or may be nearly gone by the festival's beginning. Since they are just beginning to bloom, and relatively mild weather is forecast for the next week, chances are good that the lilacs will be in perfect shape just in time for the tourists.

Highland Park, the location for the annual festival, boasts over 500 varieties of lilacs, enhanced by azaleas, rhododendrons, magnolia, forsythia, and cherry blossoms, along with carefully designed tulip and pansy beds.

Today for the first time this spring I saw lilacs blooming. My heart jumped for joy at the sight. The Lilac Festival marks the beginning of the long festival season in Rochester. From mid-May (Lilac Festival) to mid-October (River Romance Weekend), chances are you will find a festival going on somewhere in the Genesee Valley.

What I love best about festival season is the free live music. Somewhere a terrific local, regional, or even nationally known band is playing at a free outdoor concert. Living near downtown as I do, I especially enjoy the blues and jazz down at Manhattan Square Park Thursday and Friday nights. And then there are the Wednesday night and Sunday afternoon concerts out at Charlotte Beach (on Lake Ontario).

Time to break out that lawn chair...
