First Bike Ride of the New Year (BRRRR!!!)


Took my bike out today for a brief (and very cold) ride.

I finally did it.

Took my bike out today for a brief ride to the bank to deposit a check. Decided to do that rather than go to the gym (boring!) for my exercise today. It was sunny all day again, and yesterday I saw a couple of kids out on their bikes, so I figured, why not?

Of course, I didn't get out until about 4:30 p.m., and I had to stop at the Delta Sonic behind my apartment building to put air in the tires, nearly flat after sitting unused for months.

According to the temperature sign at WDKX on East Main Street, it was 30 degrees (much less, of course, if you figure in the skin-burning wind chill created by the motion of the bike).

I would have been fine if I had worn ear muffs and a muffler to protect my ears and face. But the blue sky and bright sun were deceiving when I left the house. Also, as it happens, the hood on my jacket that I usually rely upon for emergencies like this was virtually useless, since somehow the drawstring that pulls it tight around my head had pulled through one of the grommets, and I could not grasp both ends.

I could have turned back. But I didn't. I was absolutely determined to get that bike ride in, no matter what.
