Blessed Be! The lilacs!

I did it. I rode my bike all the way down to Highland Park (which is actually uphill, very uphill, from where I live), all around inside the park, and then back home. I did it because I just had to see those lilacs up close and personal after driving by them last night.

Understand, there are lots of lilac bushes blooming all around in the neighborhoods, including mine. They are gorgeous, and the scent can catch you suddenly. But down at Highland Park, the perfume can nearly knock you flat, it's so heavenly. And the colors -- every shade of pink and mauve and purple, even blue, and of course "lilac" and white!

As I told a couple of friends whom I ran into in the park (Rochester is like that -- ain't it grand?) "It doesn't get any better than this!" A warm spring evening, people out taking in the sights, walking about and riding bikes. Pushing strollers and walking dogs. Everyone smiling and laughing and saying "hello."

The best time to see them is now, before the really big crowds come. And there will be crowds, especially this time. Come before the scent gets muddled with the smell of barbeque and popcorn and fried dough. Come before the traffic is so bad you need a bike just to get from your car to the park.

And while you're there, don't forget to check out the tulip and pansy beds! Get drunk on all that color!
