Soon, soon the lilacs bloom!

Tulips, hyacinth, azaleas... soon, soon the lilacs bloom!

On my daily jaunt around the neighborhood a few days ago, I noticed the first tulips and hyacinth in bloom, along with lime green buds on the trees and shrubbery. The crocus and daffodils have been up for some time, of course. And now the tulip trees and other flowering trees are beginning to blossom. Today, I noticed azaleas. It was relatively cold (mid-forties), but the weather forecasters are promising 70s by Thursday.

It won't be long now. In a few short weeks, Rochester will be filled with the honeyed scent of lilacs.

Rochester -- nicknamed the "Flower City" -- soon will burst into a colorful blaze of spring flowers. The colors will change throughout the spring, summer, and early fall, but they will always be bright, bringing a smile each time I pass.

People often ask me why a long-time California gal like me would choose to remain in the "frozen north" long after the job that brought me here was gone. I have tons of reasons, but today I offer three:

late spring, summer, and early fall...

From May through the end of October, there is no lovelier place to be than in western New York.
