The long and winding road: My so-called career

Sun Microsystems
1992-2000. Human interface designer in the SunSoft, JavaSoft , and Forte Tools divisions. I worked on a lot of different projects at Sun, but my favorites were HotJava Views and the Java Look and Feel Design Guidelines.

Apple Computer
1989-1992. Human interface designer in the A/UX group, A/UX was Apple's version of Unix. It is one of the forerunners of the Macintosh OS X.

Philips Laboratories
1986-1988. I worked on text retrieval problems and (with Hugo Strubbe) developed a novel user model and interface for a combination TV-VCR.

University of California, San Diego
1971-1985. For the first year at UCSD, I did research on neuro-enzymology in the UCSD Medical School, looking for the cause of a disease called myasthenia gravis. But most of the time I worked with Don Norman and Dave Rumelhart in the LNR group and the Cognitive Science Laboratory doing cognitive psychology research in motor skills and learning.

University of Ghana, West Africa
1968-1970. Taught in the Department of Chemistry.
