The LNR/CSL All-Year Book

The LNR group was a cognitive psychology research group at the Univeristy of California, San Diego founded by Peter Lindsay, Don Norman, and Dave Rumelhart in 1968. Peter left in 1970 to travel the world and later the group name was changed to the Cognitive Science Lab.

A group of former LNR/CSL people got together for dinner at CHI'96 and as usual the talk turned to what had happened to our friends and colleagues. Someone suggested that we have a Web page to keep track of our wanderings, and this page is an attempt to do that. If you have comments, suggestions, updates or additions, please send them to me (gentner@mac.com) and I will try to keep the page complete and current. In many cases, I've guessed at much of the information, especially the dates at UCSD, so please send corrections. I also welcome photos (or better photos) of the folks in the group. Apologies in advance to the people that I've inadvertently left out. My memory was never that dependable and it's gotten worse with age. Just let me know and I'll be happy to add any folks I've missed.

There are some other related Web pages -- Don Norman maintains a list of his students. There are a lot of photos in the scrapbook from the Dave Rumelhart Celebration in 1999. Jim Levin also posted a collection of photos from Dave's celebration. And thanks to Bob Olds for sending me a couple of LNR phone lists from the 70s.

Happy memories,
Don

Faculty and Staff
They kept it running.

Students
Undergraduate and graduate students, the life blood of the group.

Postdocs and visitors
They typically stayed for just a couple of years, but they made a big contribution to the group and its ideas.

Friends
There was always a lively social group associated with LNR and CSL. Although not officially members of the group, these people were definitely part of the gang.
