Back from vacation . . .

Missouri is brown, dry, and hot . . .

Back from a week in St. Joseph, Missouri, to visit relatives. St. Jo sits atop the bluffs of the Missouri river. It's an old river town pretty much down on its luck and in the process of being converted into a ex-urb for Kansas City, located 60 miles to the south. Things to do in St. Jo: sleep, read, strip mall crawling, miniature golf, swim, bowl, Krug Park. (I'm leaving out the riverboat gambling . . .which occurs in a smallish reproduction of a paddle-wheeler anchored on the fringes of downtown St. Jo. Give it a try if you're jonesing for a gambling fix, otherwise it's a pass.) The KC-StJo area is in the midst of a major drought and heatwave; average daily temperature during our stay there was 103 degrees farenheit. Everything is dry, sere, brown, and in various states of dehydrated agony. Still, there are plenty of swimming pools and thanks to air-conditioning the natives don't seem too bothered by the heat.

Here's a picture of my kid outside "Big K" (K-Mart's version of Wal-Mart) at 10 p.m. on a Wed. night.
