The following is an example of an e-mail sent by Coach Neil Turner to members of the Mat-Town USA Wrestling Club located in Lock Haven, PA. Note his acknowledgment of those who helped at the practice session, the review of the technique covered, training tips mentioned, club schedule and emphasis on school work! And that just SOME of the things you can mention! Check out E-mail for more ideas.
Update #6
Sorry that our number 5 update was a little late, but I had to go to Cornell on Wednesday to look at their wrestling facility. As we continue planning for the renovation of the former Lock Haven High School gym and cafeteria complex into a wrestling center. Great session last night, really appreciated the college student athletes helping and it was nice having Dennis Mannotti from Canton and Eric Coleman from Central Mountain junior high with us. I hope more of the area high school, junior high school, and youth coaches will join us in the fall. Again, please let me know if you are getting this and have an interest in being involved.
We were able to work in the top position and added the concept of a reswitch using your outside leg and not your inside leg. The inside leg permits the person doing the switch to stepover. In the neutral position, we worked on quite a number of positions and how to counter attack when the other person has the initiative. The different type of situations were:
- When there is no contact between you and your opponent, in other words, open shots.
- When your opponent is attempting to control your head.
- When your opponent achieves inside control position.
- When your opponent has an underhook position.
- When your opponent has a two on one on your arm.
Learning how to reposition yourself to take away your opponent's advantage is absolutely critical. You must always know what your opponent can do from their position and how you can take away any advantage and create a position of advantage for yourself. This is why, when we are training, you must be totally focused mentally, emotionally, and physically so that you can develop first, mentally and over time muscle memory for every position. This is also why I insist that you never stop wrestling when we are in the competition training phase, there is never a time when you can take a break while competing. In the down position we worked on the push back turn in series and how the top person will try to counter this and how you need to respond. Look forward to seeing all of you in September once you're back in school be sure to talk to your coaches and teammates about Mat-Town USA and encourage them to join us:
- Mondays and Wednesdays 6:30pm-8:00pm, grades 9th-12th
- Tuesdays and Thursdays 6:30pm-8:00pm, grades 8th and under
We've also posted some competitive opportunities on our webpage www.mattownusa.com
Remember, the Mat-Town USA Wrestling Club is your club; we are dedicated to you, the student wrestler. With school starting, please do well in your studies. An A is a pin, a B is a superior decision, and a C is a regular decision. Be sure to earn the respect of your teachers. It helps the great sport of wrestling. See you in September.
